    shrimp, crabs, or crayfish?

Amano shrimp get bigger than most dwarf shrimpand are voracious algae eaters, but they aren't very colorful. Bamboo shrimp are fairly large too but they are filter feeders so you could have at most 1 of em in a well established 10 gal, which may still be too small for it. Tiger shrimp get a...

    Metal strip around plants?

http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f12/lead-weights-32461.html They are usually made out of a zinc-tin alloy, which is harmless. if it is a zinc-tin alloy it will be more whitish/silvery. a lead weight will be more greyish. Also if it has a high lead content when rubbed on paper it will...

    Driftwood in the reptile section

Balsa is technically a hardwood, even though it is the softest common wood. But still no good for aquariums An example of wood that will leach .toxins into your rank is cedar. It is still possible to use though. I have a nice peice of cedar in one of my tanks, took alot of prep though...

    Pygmy Gouramis

i assume you are talking about Trichopsis pumila. Ive kept mine for going on four months. Got them from the lfs rather young. They were voracious eaters at first, but have really cut back on their eating habits lately. probably a function of being fully grown. Their favorite so far is...

    Plant and other questions

I don't reccomend boiling rocks, especially sedimentary rocks. They can have pockets of water in them which can cause them to explode when boiled.

Treating algae with a blue lobster

Snails, Nerite snails can't breed in freshwater if ur worried bout overpopulation. Algae eating fish such as Otos are an option. However, I don't recomend buying them for just that reason. Plus that lobster will tend to munch on anything that spends too much time on the bottom Would need...

    baby swordtails

Bamboo shrimp are filter feeders right? I can't see em eating fry I've never bred swordtails myself but my bro has about 20 of em growing out in a10 gal right now. He's keepin it at 78 degrees. They are about 3 weeks old now. No deaths that I'm aware of

    Please help swordtail fry

Let me put it this way. If you have males and females you can't not breed them. Also lyretail males are effectively sterile, they are physically unable to mate.

    10g FW Planted Build

Good to hear your CPDs are healthy eaters, I've had ones that were quite scared of their food. Glad to hear ur gettin your fish live food, i love watching my fish hunt. Do you know what species of daphnia you are getting? Monia and Pulex, GD auto-correct, should be fine but Magna will be too...

New otto cat died first day we had it

1st: when your at a lfs and they say that two species of fish are compatible, what you should take away from that is that there is a low chance of them straight up murdering each other. Usually they will assume you have a straight freshwater tank unless you tell them otherwise. At the end of...

    Flame moss advice please...

Also flame moss has a tendancy to grow up rather than out. So when attatching it to somthing be sure to have it spread over the whole area. It grows substantialy slower than java moss so be patient.

Can someone help me identify this

yes, saying that all BGA is caused by low nitrogen levels is an oversimplification. However, the treatment that most often works is to dose nitrates. If you want to read a more in depth sciencey reply then this may help. Where did BGA = low nitrate myth arise?

Can someone help me identify this

yes that is almost definantely BGA. Its primary cause is a low level of Nitrates in your water. The easiest way to fix this is to dose nitrogen fertilizer, generaly in the form of KNO3, a level of 10-20ppm will promote plant growth while keeping algae in check. Another avenue is to reduce...

    10g nano reef build

The tropical fish society of rhode island just had their annual auction in Cumberland. You can check out their website at tfsri.net I would recommend contacting them. They should be able to point you in the direction of another local-ish auction.

    10g nano reef build

I would strongly recomend looking for an auction organized by a aquarist club. You should be able to pick up a used tank, filter and heater for dirt cheap. May even snag a powerhead and decent lighting if ur lucky.

    Basement Sump

Hmmm... I'm not familiar with any pumps designed for aquariums that can handle 20 ft of head pressure. Only thing that comes to mind would be a well pump, and that probly isn't a very good idea. Also: Aquarium Water Pump Head Pressure and Pump Performance As the head pressure increases the...

    10g FW Planted Build

as far as shrimp go, i wouldn't get your heart set on blue tiger shrimp. they are not a good beginner shrimp since they are highly inbred and very delicate as a result, not to mention hella expensive. Also i believe your ph is a bit high for for cardina sp. shrimp, they may have reduced life...

another option for diy co2 is the jello version A Jello CO2 Thread although you may want to scale down the amount of yeast for a 10 gal tank. as far as fish go i would recommend: sparkling guorami (trichopsis pumila) Mosquito Rasbora (boraras brigittae) phoenix rasbora (boraras merah) Salt and...

    Small Algae Eater?

Amano shrimp are the premier algae eating shrimp, but most other dwarf shrimps will also eat algae and their bioload is miniscule. Also the shrimps are so small and light they have no problem gettin up on the plants. If u end up gettin ottos I would recomend ottocinculus cocoma.

    Doubble red's in 40l tank

Definantely only one male in a 10 gal. While this species is a harem breeder each female claims Approx 12 inches of territory. So it is not recomended to keep more than 1 female in a 10 gal. As far as other fish, I would avoid most bottom dwellers since they will be seen as invading the...
