Electric Yellow Labs (Labridochromis caeruleus) Yellow-tailed Acei (pseudotropheus sp. Acei) Kenyi (maylandia lombarido)- aggressive. Try to avoid to start Honestly, you're best bet is to get a good reference book/ ID book. So that you can look in the tanks and research on the spot. I've got...

    another cichlid newbie

Yes. Either a bunch of different males or about 3-5 species with 1m and 3/4f. What are you looking for? Do you wanna deal with babies? - I switched to an all male so that I don't have to strip and grow out an deal with babies. Lol How much color do you want? - I also switched to males for...

Can you do an all male tank with only part of the fish.

I do not support intentional crossbreeding. It's against nature and will have long term detrimental effects on cichlids as a whole. However, selective breeding (color morphs, albinism, and other recessive traits) is fine in all regards.

    Getting REALLY discouraged!!

My fish seem to be most social/ tolerate each other best when they're eating- cause who wouldn't be happy?! I feed 2-3 times a day, but in real small amounts; it forces them to all be near one another, plus, it teaches them that motion out side of the tank is good and that they shouldn't hide! Lol

    Is this a male?

It's hard to say. Right off the bat, I would say female based upon lacking the black on the pec fins. However, I do see white coloring on re throat and other places, which points to crossbreeding. If that's the case, it could be a male with poor colors...

    55gal stock advice

Well if you're after color and variety, have you thought about going to an all male tank? I recently just returned a bunch of fish to the lfs and kept only some choice males: Electric Yellow Lab (Labridochromis c.) Electric Blue Hap (Sciaenochromis fryeri) Zebra Obliquens (Astatotilapia...

    Huge fish store in pa??

Elmers totally sucks! Way too commercialized! Wet Pets is good; once again, can be pricey and aimed toward inexperienced clientele. My two favorite are Oddball Pets (they breed a lot and got hundreds of species to choose from- not a huge selection of salt water) And Aqua World Super Pet...

    thoracochromis brauschi

Yes! They are very cool! I just got an Astatotilapia latifiscia (sp?) recently; it's pretty peaceful, and like the blood throat, much different looking than the 'normal' cichlids. Lol

What do i need to get started??

I've been keeping fw for quite a while but I'm curious in getting started with a freshwater tank... If I wanted to try a sw tank, what would I need? I'm thinking I'd like to do a 20 gallon with corals, maybe a fish. Lol But the main thing would be like buying cheaper small coral frags and...

    Peacocks and mnuba cichlids?

Peacocks are the best as far as not much aggression relatively speaking. It's very possible it could just rubbed up against anything. If there's no real aggression and it's just a single scale, I wouldn't worry too much
