    Moving an aquarium

Within the next few weeks I will have to move a 35 gallon aquarium to a new location. It will only be a 15-20 minute drive. Heating will not be a problem as it will be over 80°F outside. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks, Michael

A shrimp suddenly appeared in my aquarium

The only thing I can imagine is that a fish that I bought had ingested a larvae (if that's what it's called) and later excreted it. Even if that can happen it would seem like a very long incubation period, although I don't know how small the crabs are when they first hatch. It will remain one...

A shrimp suddenly appeared in my aquarium

I don't have the right lens to photograph something so small but this image http://i55.tinypic.com/bevek0.jpg might give you all a clue. What's so weird is that the aquarium (35 gall) in enclosed except for when I feed the fish. I did to a 25% water change a few days ago though. It's a pretty...

A shrimp suddenly appeared in my aquarium

It's about 3/4" of an inch long; has six legs at the front; a v shaped tail and whiskers. I isolated it a while ago but it's still alive and can jump. Michael

A shrimp suddenly appeared in my aquarium

I think it's a shrimp anyway. Looks like a Cherry Red Shrimp but is more transparent than red. I haven't added any fish or plants for at least a couple of months. So where did it come from? Thanks, Michael

Thanks for the reply and for the info which I didn't know ;-) Michael

A cycled tank that doesn't have fish

Thanks for the reply. It's an isolation tank for newly purchased fish with lots of aeration with about 5 inches of fish for five gallons. I'd prefer to put pregnant live bearers in there and save some of the fry. So would a pregnant live-bearer and/or fry produce enough ammonia to keep the...

A cycled tank that doesn't have fish

Thanks for the reply. I have 7 healthy fish in there (5 gallon - couple of cardinals, 4 black widows and a platty) right now and they could be transferred to my main aquarium. How many inches of fish do you think I'd need to keep in it to keep it cycled? I have a couple of pregnant...

A cycled tank that doesn't have fish

Thanks for the replies. I decided to just keep some fish in it since it's in my bedroom. Easier than adding ammonia. If I need the tank for something then I'll just put the fish that are in it into my larger tank. I put in three black widow tetras. Michael

    PWC - chlorine and temperature.

Hi, When I do a partial water change say 1/4 do I need to dechlorinate the new water? And add a conditioner? And how close does the temperature of the new water need to be to that in the freshwater tank? Thanks, Michael

A cycled tank that doesn't have fish

Hi, I have a small 5 gallon tank that I set up to isolate newly bought fish or for a sick one. It's been cycled. Next week I won't have any fish to put in there (hopefully); so will it stay cycled and safe for fish if I leave the filter running? Thanks, Michael

    High mortality for new fish

Thank you and everybody else for your kind help. My local store didn't have a test for nitrates but I'll track one down. I now know the importance of "cycling"! I can honestly say though that 40 years ago my teenage friends and I used to set up aquariums, wait for 24 hours and then add fish...

    High mortality for new fish

Two of the neons looked and still look fine but the other two still didn't look well balanced, and they were hiding out behind the heater so I did a partial water change today. The forth one doesn't seem in bad shape but still doesn't come out. I did add a few live plants yesterday which...

    High mortality for new fish

Nitrites I tested but nitrates not, and will do so. I didn't think that nitrate was generally a problem. I opened and floated the bags for around 15 minutes and then gradually added water from the aquarium to the bags. Then I poured the fish into a net letting the water go into a bowl and...

    High mortality for new fish

Thanks very much. I had a tropical fish store 40 years ago and thought this would be easy. I set up the aquarium for my daughter. I'd never seen pink danios until a few weeks ago and I now have a problem telling platties from mollies. I find all this stuff now about injecting colors etc...

    High mortality for new fish

Thanks for replying. If your ammonia and nitrites are truly zero, AND your nitrates are showing a good reading (no higher than 20, but should be at least 5) then your tank is now cycled...but you lost quite a few fish in the process, unfortunately :( If you put the new fish in your 5 gallon...

    High mortality for new fish

Thanks for the fast reply. I imagine that PWC means X water change? I did vacuum and change 1/3 of the water in the bigger tank today. But why in the 5 gallon one? The water has only been in there a few days and it's been conditioned. Many years ago I had several aquariums and bred lots of...

    High mortality for new fish

I set up a 35 gallon freshwater tank around 5 weeks ago and added nutrfin aquaplus. I let it stand for several days with an external filter; undergravel filters and air stones running. I then slowly added supposedly easy to keep fish, such as live bearers; algae eaters; neons and a pair of...

How to set up a 35 gallon aquarium

Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. Hey, you're doing me a favor ;-) You are pretty much on, you will need the filter when you start the tank though, it has to be running during your cycle. I would get 5 more pounds of rock atleast, it does not all have to be cured. Base rock is...

How to set up a 35 gallon aquarium

Thanks for the reply. I'm surprised that your store sells both kinds of rock for the same price and now that I have some idea of what I'm talking about I will go into my local store and get some answers. Michael

How to set up a 35 gallon aquarium

Thanks for the replies. Let's see if the following makes sense for a 35 gallon tank. I'm attempting to keep the costs down without cutting corners that I might later regret. I buy .. about 35lbs of substrate - fine sand or aragonite. 15 lbs of living rock 15 lbs of regular rock (any kind...

How to set up a 35 gallon aquarium

Purevil21 Thanks for the ongoing help :-) Right now I just want to set up something for my grand kids and maybe later I'll get more involved and do something like this for myself ;-) We all live in Arad Israel and there are some pictures here. Only going to keep fish in this aquarium and...

How to set up a 35 gallon aquarium

Thanks Purevil21 "How thick a sand bed do I want". I can only speak about how I'd like it to look aesthetically, so maybe 1½" at the front and 3" at the back - but I'm really thinking about my old fresh water aquariums. "What kind of sand?". Whatever would be best for the eco-system...

How to set up a 35 gallon aquarium

Hi, my daughter just bought a 35gallon rectangle aquarium with a base and that's all we have right now. I kept and bred freshwater fish for many years and also had a tropical fish shop (freshwater), so I have a fishy background ;-) The family want marines and I did have them successfully for...
