Sounds like selling it is a real option, the money could be well invested into your other tanks or coudl be used to assist a junior family member (thinking of extended family, you have enough tanks [and i don't know if you have junior family members of your own]) to get into aquarium keeping :)

Have you tested the tap water for nitrites and nitrates? The reason I ask is that I live in a farming area and the town water supply (which is sourced from the river) is extremely high in nitrates. I now use RO/DI rain water and it solved a lot of issues.

From what you're describing I would say that the LFS means that the fish are not hardy in adverse water conditions. If you cycle your tank (I'm sure others who have been here longer will provide links to information about cycling the tank) then you can generally add the less hardy fish and also...
