bought a house, now re-cycling my 90 gal, need fact check

Ok, so i set it up and threw in 4 tinfoil barbs (3 of which I am growing temporarily for my friend's 150, and they are just babies) and an oscar a friend gave me who is still juvenille. I am on my 7th day of having resident fish and have been feeding sparingly. Here are my readings: Ph 7.8...

Golden Gouramis dying with white crust around mouth

ok I see that and the treatments on the list...it is odd that just the 2 golds died and so rapidly! Beginning to end was 2 days, but I am watching these guys closely. Thanks again for all the input people!

Golden Gouramis dying with white crust around mouth

90 gallons and going strong...still no sign of it in any other fish. The charts showed nothing that stood out...not too sure what it was but it seems gone now. Maybe they were sick when I got them, but the tank was in great shape and should not have stressed them in the slightest, other than...

    Crazy mollies

Also (I love feeling like an old pro when I say this :D) did you cycle the tank first or are you in the process of it? Get the Doc Wellfish master test kit and keep a close eye on the water readings...I wish I had done mine about 3 weeks sooner and read this board...

    Crazy mollies

if they are like mine they will swim up and down the back and sides of the tank for hours, but yeah I am looking at one of them now chilling out, floating in place. The first time you see one asleep you will think it is dead...scared the crap out of me...found him wedged in between a plant and...

Golden Gouramis dying with white crust around mouth

how long should I QT them? God my wife is going to kill me when I tell her we are getting another tank :D that will make 3. The other golden died yesterday morning...all other members of the tank are doing fine...I will be keeping a very close eye on them as I have most of the next week off.

Golden Gouramis dying with white crust around mouth

They were fine for 2 weeks, eating, chasing the other blues around and having a great time. Yesterday (one day after we added some pictus catfish), they were both acting a little lethargic, but they ate when I dropped the flakes. Even did a water test last night and all were within parameters...

    Pleco advice?

Zucchini is a favorite in my tank too, although the snails kind of take over on it :D I take a test tube from an ammonia kit that was used up and fill it with gravel and water...tie that to the zucchini and sink it.

    90 Gal stocking suggestions

OK, done with the cycle (thanks to Menagerie and all the others who posted in my other thread :D) and am about to populate my tank. After hours of debate my wife and I have decided to go with tropical aggressives. The ones that stand out in our minds are moonlight gouramis, silver dollars...

    new tank need help

OK been doing the water changes and the NO2 is sticking at zero. The snails and plecos are in heaven. All other parameters were normal yesterday, but I will test tonight when I get home. Let me just say that you guys have been great. You have made my cycling much easier and healthier for the...

    new tank need help

and now to top it off one of our apple snails plopped a whole crapload of eggs up above the waterline! the bottom looks like it has been picked at by the platies but there are a ton left! I love this stuff. While I am at it, I just tested the levels and all was the same except for the most...

    new tank need help

Test strips were close enough for it to count :( Got the Doc Wellfish kit and here is what I got: Baseline tap readings: PH 7.6 GH 14 NO2 0 Ammonia 0 Tank readings: PH 7.8 GH 12 NO2 3.0 Ammonia 0 There were no nitrate tests except the strips, but that never seemed high, always well within the...

    new tank need help

ok when I get home I will get that master test kit and test both the tank and the tap water. if my baseline is high in nitrites (ammonia has ceased to be a problem; i was thinking there may be a steady source of it though to keep the trites so high, perhaps the tap water) what is my next course...

    new tank need help

I have the Emporer 400 biowheel and a penguin 120 (can't recall the exact number) biowheel, but the total GPH is 560. The ammonia is negative right now and has been since the nitrites spiked. I have seen that Doc Wellfish master test kit and am now kicking myself for not getting it. I will do...

    new tank need help

tested it for what? I guess the answer is no to that... I am usingf the strip tests for Nitrites and Nitrates (liquid for ammonia)...that was all they had at Petsmart or my LFS the last few times I checked. aside from PH, ammonia and the Trites and trates, what should I test for? I dont...

    new tank need help

still the same news...Trites at 4 and trates at 25-30, with daily water changes of 40-50% and vacuuming the gravel over 2 days twice now with the same readings...am I missing something? What else should I be doing to further this along? Ammonia is also absent. I still have the 4 in there (2...

    new tank need help

excellent! the ammonia is at an undetectable level...nitrITES are still high at 4 (after water change of 50% this am) and nitrATES are still only at around 30 or so...how long do the Trates take to conquer the trites?
  19. T

    new tank need help

ok here are the parameters: Ammonia: 0.5 Nitrites: 4.5 Nitrates: 40 and climbing PH 7.2 I did a 45% water change this am and since then the nitrites have jumped back up this high. This is a normal part of the water cycle, right? And I am assuming I should continue with daily water changes...

    new tank need help

yes did one this am and the nitrites dropped back down to 3. did not have time to test all the parameters, but will do so at lunch. the fish are acting ok...last signs of the ich are gone and they are darting around and eating as normal the snails are hanging at the top of the tank though...

    new tank need help

ok so now I am starting to think this tank cycling stuff is pretty cool...I checked the ammonia this afternoon and it was down to 1 or below for the first time since I started testing. Then I tested the Nitites/Trates and the Nitrites have exploded all the way up to past 5. I have yet to see...

    new tank need help

ok, the ammonia is staying at right around 1-1.5 the last couple of days, as are the nitrites (3.0 but seeming to maybe climb) and nitrates (35-40). Ich is also finally seeming to respond (read: die). I also put another small filter on to bring my cycling up to 540 gph. I am going to not do...

    new tank need help

ok good news, the ammonia has dropped significantly, down to just over 1, and the nitrites are in the stress range but only barely with the nitrates in the safe range. No deaths today, but the poor things are just covered with white spots. One of the plecos and 2 of the mollies are unaffected...

    new tank need help

I am actually going to do water changes and medications...the last skirt died this morning practically in front of me. Tonight I am going to get another filter and see what happens with the mollys and plecos...are these two species known as very tough? we have a bubble wand and a bubble wall...
