And whats so bad about that list? Its alittle conservative granted but not so bad. After all petsmart seems to think a goldfish in a half gallon bowl is ok. Im kidding of course. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Aquarium Advice mobile app

    I got a nice jar :)

I was afraid the spigot would be a potential leak spot long term. I will try to post pics soon. I am figuring it will be a walstad style tank/bowl thing lol Sent from my SCH-I545 using Aquarium Advice mobile app

    I got a nice jar :)

I got a 2 gallon drink dispenser jar! I have filled the spigot with silicone just for safety and now must decide on decor and stocking :) I am going to dirt it and Im thinking black gravel with some colorednglass mixed in. I will be using some emmersed plants with roots in the water. I would...

How to Setup a Low Maintainance Tank

Yes plants absorb calcium. However I believe this is vastly overestimated since i have never actually heard of abone having an issue. I certainly havent and my water is soft out the tap anyway. Plus one of my tanks has an enourmous piece of driftwood. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Aquarium Advice...

How to Setup a Low Maintainance Tank

I use tap only. There is alot of evidence that this method will work. I usually put a small amout of crushed coral in my tank to sdd calcium. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Aquarium Advice mobile app

How to Setup a Low Maintainance Tank

Yes that is true. You can still use a conventional filter though (I do). It adds alittle more difficulty if you do a filterless setup. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Aquarium Advice mobile app

How to Setup a Low Maintainance Tank

This is actually a spinoff from the self sustaining tank thread. It seems quiet a few people are interested in tbe idea of a tank that requires little upkeep. I am going to detail here how to setup a tank that requires no (or very few) water changes, algae scrubbing, or plant trimming. You can...

    Self-Sustaining Tank???

I think we have branched into two seperate converstaions. Those who want a limited maintainance tank and those who want a self sustained econsystem tank. I am going to post a how to guide on making a low maintainance tank (ie little to nk water changes) hopefully tonight with all my research ajd...

    Self-Sustaining Tank???

That is a misconception. "Self sustaining" tanks dont need lots of algae. Mine has very little if any. Its all about balance :) Sent from my SCH-I545 using Aquarium Advice mobile app

Is it flat? Lools to me like a limpet. Basically a dlat snail. They breed like mad then seem to have a die off the come back. Dont hurt anything though. If you have good eyes you can see their mouths movinh like a snails when they are on the glass. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Aquarium Advice...

    Self-Sustaining Tank???

    Self-Sustaining Tank???

If you dont have plants a seof sustaining tank may not be possible. Live rocks and DSB may work for trates but will allow other nutrients to accumalate. Crayfish will eat plants. Get you a self cloning crayfish. He will eat the plants and as he reproduces the babies can be food for some fish...

    Self-Sustaining Tank???

I have never run into a fish that actually eats plants. Especially not a small one. If you have algae then the flagfish apparantly eat that. Ottos would eat that too. Maybe a type of snail that eats live plants woukd be better. My plants all grow slow so I dont want them eaten. I didnt want to...

    Self-Sustaining Tank???

Its a cycle. The fish eat and poop. The poop makes nutrients and the plants absorb them. Keeping the water clean. If you are just trying to keep the water clean that is the simplified process. Low maintainance plants and low bioload are a must. As is a good substrate. If you are trying to make...

    Self-Sustaining Tank???

Yes my experience has been the same. Plants perk up with top offs or water changes. Tbe point of a sustainabke tank is to not have to add anything like ferts. Maybe your plants are not right for this setup? Seachem makes good products I here though. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Aquarium Advice...

    Self-Sustaining Tank???

So I dont knos anything about the sulfur. In theory the soil should add it back. My africa leaf fish setup has no emmersed plants and is very near if not self sustaining (I do have to feed them). I have crypt, anubias, java moss, and java fern in it. A variety of plants helps absorb all...

    Self-Sustaining Tank???

Its been awhile lol Actually I have a tank that has had maybe 2 or 3 small water changes in 6 months. The key really is a nutrient absorbing (ie dirt) substrate, plants, and low bioload. I dont think emmersed are necessary anymore either. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Aquarium Advice mobile app
