    Algae issues. Few questions.

It was the light. I had it on WAY to long. I scrubbed off the algae and have cut way back, which has helped a ton. But it was a pretty nasty bloom of it. So when I set the tank back up after the move it's going to be an issue again since I'm re-using the filter?

    Algae issues. Few questions.

I have a bloom of algae on my tank walls and the tubes running into the tank. I'm about to move into my new house so I have to empty the tanks anyways and I'm going to do a REALLY good clean on them (probably switch gravel as well as I've been wanting to do that for awhile now). My biggest...

    Switching to sand... Possible?

I have a mbuna tank right now with all fish being around 2". I have gravel substrate. I was wondering if I could safety switch to sand substrate and how I'd even go about doing that? I don't currently have any spare tanks to house the fish, and I imagine putting sand in and then water would...

    New tank ideas... input wanted

Okay. So the 75 is coming probably another few months. Just planning ahead. So you suggest moving all the mbuna over into the 75 gallon and then making the current 29 gallon a shell dwelling tank? Few questions: 1. Is there anything that will go well with the shell dwellers? 2. How would...

    New tank ideas... input wanted

I found a guy in my city who can get me shell dwellers at 5 for $10 (so $2/each)... if I get 10 of them he'll give em to me for $15 total. I gotta decide how many and what other cichlids they will work with though in the 75 gallon.

    Still water?

I think an air pump would def. work... but if you are using a HOB filter you can just decrease the water level some so it "splashes" into the water.

    Still water?

You need more surface agitation, not necessarily water "movement". Do you not have any air stones or wands or anything like that? You really need to add some if not. It helps with the oxygen in the water. It will also take care of your film on the surface issue.

    New tank ideas... input wanted

from Lake Tanganykia Here is a link to info about them: Shell Dwellers I'm still researching... just want to know if they can handle themselves with other cichlids as they are so darn small... or if it has to be a shell dwelling tank ONLY.

    New tank ideas... input wanted

So... soon I'll be picking up a 75 gallon tank (to add to my collection of 2 5gallons and 1 29gallon).... I want it to be a cichlid tank (my current 29 gallon is a mbuna tank). I'll most likely be moving over some of my cichlids from the 29 gallon as some might get a tad big for it... but after...

    Feeding cichlids

Interesting. So it seems everybody kind of has their own feeding habits. From a little bit a few times a day all the way to only 3 times a week.

    Feeding cichlids

So let me ask you this... if I have 6.. so that's 12-18 pellets... do you just dump them all in at once or actually try to feed to certain fish (which is pretty impossible from my guess lol).... I'd say now I'm doing just about that much... probably closer to the 18 mark... but I'm def. NOT...

    Feeding cichlids

Yes? To which part of the question ;) Not trying to be difficult just wanting to make sure I get this right... I really like all these little guys. I just want to make sure nobody goes starving while the slightly bigger ones pig out but I don't want to overfeed them either (like it appears I...

    Feeding cichlids

I appreciate the feedback for sure. And I Just noticed the belly's tonight, and I am always looking closely at them so I don't think it's been an ongoing issue.. but since I noticed it tonight I feel it's an issue I def. need to address so it doesn't become a real problem. I'll def. be fasting...

    Feeding cichlids

So, feeding my betta's are really easy. Feeding these cichlids are a tad harder. I feel that I may be feeding them a little to much (maybe often) and want to avoid any issues. I was just watching them in the tank tonight and noticed their belly's were a tad big... so I'm assuming I fed them...

    Maingano question

Yeah he loves that hut. He does the same thing. Comes out to keep all in line then back in he goes lol.
  18. M

    Maingano question

He's coming out more and more but still really shy. He also doesn't really come out during the times I feed. He gets a piece or two that's it if it lands in front of his hut.

    Maingano question

I got a maingano 2 days ago (almost exactly) when I got all my other fish... he has gotten along well with all my other cichlids (yellow lab and rusties)... but he's pretty much been held up in his little "hut" non-stop. He never comes out. How long will this behavior last do you think...

    Am I cycling correctly?

You really need to get yourself a test kit. The API is the best one around, it's what most of us use. They can be had on amazon for $20. I have two betas, both are in a 5 gallon tank each, with a HOB filter and a heater. That's another thing to consider, Beta's really like the heat... so...

yay! - My tank is cycling

I'd do a PWC if the ammonia is that high. If it's off the charts that can def. stall your cycle out. I'd do a PWC to get the ammonia back down to 3-4ppm.

My fishless cycle log (fast forwarded some)

Yeah... it was INSANE. I mean literally 24 hours after I added them both... I had NO2 & NO3 growth rapidly. 6 days later... well 5 days technically, day 6 was just to be sure... it was all finished. 5 day cycle really isn't so bad lol!

My fishless cycle log (fast forwarded some)

I would just like to add that in my personal opinion, the two things that REALLY made my cycle go REAL fast were the addition of the Seachem Replenish and the Active Sponge Filter. Literally days after I added them my cycle was going nuts. Literally the very next day my NO2 & NO3 started...

My fishless cycle log (fast forwarded some)

Day 32: Ammonia: 0 (22 hours after I dosed it back to 4-5ppm) NO2: 0 (still 0 from yesterday even after dosing ammonia back up) NO3: off the charts pH: 8.2 Well... second day of ammonia=0 and NO2=0. NO3 is off the charts. I want to buy some fish tomorrow or Saturday... what's the next step...

    Fishless Cycle; stuck on Nitrites

I believe I am officially done (will know tonight when I check again) but it took me about 31-35 days for my cycle... the NO2 --> NO3 part takes the longest.
