    5.5 Gallon Planted: Attempt Two

Live rock is calcium based. It will boost the pH of your water, I think. But really, you don't want a lot of rock in there anyway. I have a freshwater and a saltwater, and I don't think I would like the look of bleached coralline algae in my planted tank. Try some driftwood. Good luck!

    Live Rock Comparison

Generally fiji rock is purple-coralline coated and porous. It is generally considered the most common type. I dont really know about caribbean rock. I do know that there is gulf and tonga rock, which are both different from fiji. Gulf is often extremely heavily populated with organisms...

That makes sense. Thanks for clearing that one up!

    Ram Care

If this is in the wrong forum, I apologize and it would be great if you could move it. I was at the store today and saw beautiful blue rams swimming around in the planted tank. I really would like to get some, but of course only if they are suitable. I plan to have a well-planted 29 gallon...

    Speaking of Frozen Bloodworms...

I recently had an incident with frozen bloodworms. I noticed how much my fish loved 'em, so I decided to feed them to my pond. Well, the koi ate them up (or so I thought), so all was good. Then the day came to wash off the filter floss in the pond filter. Upon opening it, I noticed a lot of...

RO or DI usage in FW

Thanks a lot! You answered my question perfectly.

    filter for 39gal

I haven't used that large of a tank, but I have used a bio-wheel and they are great. It would be really good to try the 330 because of the dual cartridge and wheel system.

RO or DI usage in FW

I know that RO is good for saltwater, but you usually add either kalk or salt (with CA and pH boosters in it) to the RO. As far as freshwater goes, is the water too "bland" to support plants and fish correctly? If you use CO2, won't your pH drop dangerously? And, assuming RO isn't good, what...

    CO2 Idea

good point. What about a drip setup, like kalkwasser (of course, then you may as well go for yeast but what the hey, right?)

    CO2 Idea

This is probably a dumb idea for reasons that I cannot figure out, so plase try not to flame me too bad :) OK, why can't you maintain CO2 levels simply by using club soda (plain water with CO2 in it for soda) sometimes when you top off or pouring a little in daily, and testing to see how much...

    Converting to Freshwater Please Advise

Ah ok. Well, thanks, I think I would just use my 10k 55 single PC for light. As far as my knowledge of chemistry, I have to say I think I did everything right. I use pure RO/DI, kalkwasser top-off, plenty of herbivores, only 2 clowns, 30 lbs live rock, remora skimmer, and manual removal...

    Converting to Freshwater Please Advise

Sorry, I should have clarified. Bio-wheels do too much aeration, leading to a CO2 defecit in a heavily planted tank. Thanks everyone for the fast and very comprehensive advice!

    Converting to Freshwater Please Advise

OK, first off, hello. This looks like a great forum. Situation: I have a 33 gallon reef set up that I am taking down. Firstly, it is too troublesome for me to have to deal with all of the maintenance I have to do on it. Second, I have been having algae problems and cannot get them under...
