I just put these 4 barbs in, about 4inches in length. Tank is 180litres, only other fish in there is the Rainbow shark. I am hoping regular water changes should keep the Nitrite in check.

If you decide to get more, bear in mind how big these fish get, 6inches or so and quite bulky. I have a Rainbow shark who doesn't do much while the lights are on but the moment you turn them out he is out doing his thing all night long.

Injecting CO2 into the water will lower the pH. CO2, pH and KH (carbonate hardness) are all interrelated. This article http://www.hallman.org/plant/booth1.html will explain it better than I can.
