ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

WHOA! I am so glad you told me about banging the #2 bottle. I was at 20PPM and had no idea! PWC coming right up. Temps down to 77. I think I might try to bring it to 80 since all that's going in this tank is a Betta and an Apple Snail. Thanks again so much for cautioning me on the #2 bottle!

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

things calmed down today and I'm back to 0 on ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. I'm really not sure why my nitrates have not spiked as that is what all the guides predict to happen. Perhaps the plants are taking care of it, since it's fairly heavily planted. ph is at 7.8. I've dropped the...

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

I've been testing the PH daily and it's high but steady. Most days it will be between 7.8 and 8.0. Maybe every fourth day it will spike up to 8.2 and then I do a 10-20% PWC to fix it. I guess the other change is that I brought the tank up to a full level. Before I was keeping it at 60% or so...

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

Apparently the additional airstones were definitely making a difference. Just one day without them and my ammonia and nitrates level rose. I'll keep dosing with Ammonia, testing and then lowering the temperature to the correct temp and update before I finally toss some fish in.

    Walmart plant bulbs

Looks like an aponogeton. They've been one of my most hardy plants I've had come from those betta bulbs. It's nice because I haven't done any of that CO2 stuff and they still just thrive. Glad to hear you're having good luck with them.

What to use to clean splash guard

Thanks for the suggestions. The vinegar did just the trick :)

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

Close to finishing the cycle, possibly. I add ammonia every day to bring it up to 4PPM and by the next 24 hours, there are zero ammonia, nitrite or nitrates. I'm now starting to remove some of the airstones each day until the tank is running the way it would be if fully inhabited by the fish...

What to use to clean splash guard

I've got a plastic splash guard that's getting a little funky. Do I just use normal windex on it or soap and water or something else I don't know about? Thanks, Dan

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

Minor update. It took a long time for the seeded filters to show up. Not the fault of AngelsPlus, the post office damaged it in the mail and they had to reship, plus I ordered right before Thanksgiving. Just got the filter put in the tank. Do I have this thing set up right? I threaded the...

    Killifish tank

thanks for explaining why people go with trios. I didn't know about the male/female color difference, but I should have expected it since guppies do the same thing. And you're right, the one I wanted to get was a gardneri and they're looking for at least 20gallons. So I guess I'll have to...

    Killifish tank

It's just that I only have a small, 10 gallon, tank. So I could probably only keep 3 killifish. If they spawned I would never really be able to do anything with the fry. So I don't know if that means I'm screwed. On top of which, no one sells locally so I'd have to buy from aquabid and they...

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

I ordered a seeded filter tonight. Finally got the temp up on the big tank. Also doubled the number of air stones. And chopped up my old filters to remove the carbon stones. Then put in some new filter media(just some plain Fluval stuff, no carbon) and then the fiber part of the old filters...

    Killifish tank

I'm interested in killifish. Is there a reason why everyone always seems to get a trio of a male and two females? Because they live short lives and you want eggs to replace them? Or is it impractical to keep 3 females or 3 males?

    active sponge filters

Do you think 1 4" active filter would be enough for a 10 gallon? oh, and did you get snails from your filters? they warn about it on their website.

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

funny quote of the day from a big box pet store, after I tried to ask for some seeded filter medium. "some people recommend setting up a tank for a month, but we've found that a week is what most people need" then I start explaining that no, my ammonia is only dropping and I'm getting no...

2 Smaller water heaters or 1 Larger one?

I've got a 10 gallon tank with a 50W heater. Since I keep my house extremely cold, the heater is having a hard time keeping my temperatures higher than normal for my cycle. I've got it cranked up to the highest level it will go and it's sitting at around 78 degrees. So my question is, should...

    Guppies and Ghost Shrimp!

I'm dying to finish my cycle so I can get a glass shrimp. I saw a different type of shrimp the other day, a bit bigger, and they are so cute just busting their butts in along the bottom.

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

I do have several plants in the tank. I'm wondering if 2 aponogeton, 2 onions and a bleheri were enough to suck up those nitrates as they're going like crazy. They're not full sized as they were started from bulbs, but I have read that plants can consume nitrates. I did a PWC to bring PH...

    Walmart plant bulbs

I get my bulbs from petco. They're from Complete Aquatic Systems in California. I've generally gotten a 80% success rate and I get about 5 bulbs for $4. Then if I send them a SASE with the bad bulb they'll send me some fresher bulbs(so roughly 88 cents plus the cost of envelope). I've had...

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

I'm back to getting weird readings again. @jlk, I am now cycling 2 tanks. I'll break them up more clearly this time. TINY TANK yesterday temp 79F PH 6.6 Ammonia 4PPM Nitrite 5PPM Nitrate 30PPM I didn't do anything. Just was happy to see nitrites and nitrates today Temp 79F PH 6.0 or...

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

Found ammonia at 2PPM yesterday. Added 104 drops of ammonia over a period of several hours. I was testing every 20 minutes. I think the cycle has started as the ammonia reading wouldn't budge. Gave up on it for the night. Today I bought some Ace Hardware ammonia. Also talked to a LFS guy...

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

Okay, 50% change 3 days ago. Ammonia was still at 8PPM and nitrites stayed at 1PPM. Repeated 2 days ago. Ammonia is now at 4PPM. Nitrites have dropped to 0PPM. So I may be starting over from scratch again. The plants are all doing pretty well. Is the basic theory just to try to add enough...

ammonia bad out of tap and Culligan machine

oh, and I removed one betta bulb that was rotting. I suspect that was the source of my ammonia increase as I haven't added ammonia since 10/27.
