    Replacing filter media

I have a cannister and a hob running on my 75 gallon. The HOB sponge cartridges seem to be a bit beaten up and need changing. If I am not touching the cannister is it safe to change the sponges on the HOB without causing the tank to cycle again?

    PH and buffering

Good to know as I would prefer to avoid having to buffer if possible. It's one less thing to have to worry about.

    PH and buffering

Just wondering what everyone keeps their PH at and if they buffer to achieve that level. My PH sits at around 7.6-7.8 without buffering if I bypass my water softner. I am interested in getting my fish to breed and want to provide the best levels for that.

    Malawi Rift Tank

Thanks. I am just a little worried about how safe the rocks are. I did vinegar test and gave them a good scrub in hot water then I let them soak so hopefully there is no metal or anything that might hurt fish.

    Malawi Rift Tank

I laid egg crate first and then sand. I am going to add more sand as well to ensure the rocks are secure.

    Malawi Rift Tank

I am debating if I have too many rocks for the fish to find caves or if I show move anything. I plan to add more sand once the rocks are set and a black background

    Malawi Rift Tank

I am currently in the process of setting up a 75 gallon rift tank and want to get it as real as possible. Looking for some opinion on how it looks so far. Any suggestions or anyone spot any problems?

    55g Stocking Question

Lol. Can't blame him. Waiting for the cycle to complete is the most painful part.

    55g Stocking Question

How did you do your cycle? If you dosed with ammonia to 4.0ppm and the cycle did truly complete (ammonia and nitrites are at 0 within 24 hours of dosing) then I think you should probably be able to fully stock the tank at one time. The point of dosing to 4.0 in cycling is to build up a very high...

Filtration for 90 Gallon Mbuna Tank

Current stock is only about a dozen yellow labs but would probably be looking to overstock slightly as I would like to add a group of yellow tail acei and either a group of salousi or scolofi depending on what I can find locally in good quality.

Filtration for 90 Gallon Mbuna Tank

I am in the process of upgrading my mbuna tank to 90 gallons. I already have an eheim 2217 cannister which I plan to use for filtration. I am just not sure this filter alone will provide enough flow to turnover the water enough times. Should I add a powerhead or a HOB? Suggestions?

    Armegedon??

    Best of luck

    55g Stocking Question

I don't see an issue as they are both fairly dosile in terms of African cichlids. If you don't like saulosi you could do Scolofi but they are a bit larger. The beauty of salousi in a 55 is that they stay fairly small and give you two different appearances from male to female.

    55g Stocking Question

The only issue I would see with Red Zebra and Yellow Lab is that people have reported they could cross breed because they are similar in appearance. This becomes an issue if you want to sell any fry.

    Armegedon??

This is what I think too HUKIT but the point I am trying to make is that this is a good opportunity to get his Nitrate levels back down and ensure all his parameters are in good order so he can start restocking.

    Armegedon??

Just removing the deceased unfortunately will not lower your nitrates. It will only prevent them from rising further. As the fish start decomposing they will elevate your nitrates even more. I would remove the deceased and then do a big water change. Before testing again.

    Armegedon??

Yes but nitrates are the end product of the cycle. This could be somewhat elevated by all the dead fish but I would also suggest upping water changes to at least once per week. Water changes are the best way to keep nitrate levels under control. I do a 50% water change weekly for example.

    55g Stocking Question

Salousi, Yellow Labs and Yellow Tail Acei would make a great mix both in personality and would give you some great color.

    Armegedon??

The one thing you will find on this forum is that a lot of the most experienced posters will recommend not using strips as they are known to be inaccurate. If you can get your hands on an API Freshwater Master Test Kit that is pretty much recognized as the most accurate on the market and pretty...

    Armegedon??

If the temperature was at 85 for an extended period of time I doubt that would kill them all at once. If the heater malfunctioned last night and the temperature suddenly shot up from 78 where it should be to 85 that could do it. 7 degrees is a big change if it happenned over only an hour or 2

    Armegedon??

What are your water parameters? (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate) Has anything changed recently like any new additions to the tank? Where the fish showing any signs of strange behaviour or appearance (spots, swollen belly, red gills, etc)? Also did you do a water change last night or add anything to...

    Yellow Lab Digging/Mouthing

Yes I am planning an upgrade to a 75 gallon hopefully by the end of the year once my basement is finished at that point I am going to try my hand at a Malawi biotope

    Yellow Lab Digging/Mouthing

I guess as longs as its normal behaviour and there is nothing wrong with him I will just wait and see what happens. The water parameters look good as mentioned other than the nitrate being a tad higher than I would like.

    Yellow Lab Digging/Mouthing

Interesting but he has never shown aggression to the other fish in the tank. Also I am confused about the digging that he was doing. It was almost like he was sweeping the sand away with his pectoral fins. Any chance of this being a sign of breeding?

    Yellow Lab Digging/Mouthing

One of my Yellow Labs was doing something strange tonight that I have never seen. He was digging holes in the sand using his pectoral fins and his mouth. He was also mouthing at the glass. This went on for an hour or so. To give some background info. He is in a 36 gallon with 4 other yellow...
