    Reef lighting

Ocean Revive, low end kessil (160's), T5 or Red Sea 90. Which would you choose given due consideration for price and quality? Not sure the budget Kessils would be strong enough. I don't need something crazy controllable.... but do like the Kassil and Red Sea because they don't look like a giant...

    Dosing pump

25%-35% water changes every other week work?

Here's my tank. How do I fix it?

I will post water parameters later, but generally ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are all 0. Calcium tends to be a little low in the 375-400 range. Hammer or torch coral (not 100% which it is) hasn't been terribly happy since I got it several months ago. There's a layer of purple stuff that looks a...

    Dosing pump

So, I'm considering getting a dosing pump. Have you noticed a significant improvement after installing one? Will I regret getting a three channel pump instead of a 4? Any recommendations on a reliable pump that won't break the bank?

    Need advice on GHA solution

Affirmative. O on two separate API kits (one older than the other) and the salifert test.

    Need advice on GHA solution

I bought a salifert nitrate test because I wasn't believing the API test. 0 nitrates. And how do you remove and scrub down a rock that has coral on it? The rocks that are - say - 4 inches above the substrate have no GHA at all. It's all towards the bottom of the rock pile. I'm tempted to over...

    Soft Coral Lighting

55 Gallon Fresh to Salt Conversion - Have Canister - Protein Skimmer Still Required?

If you have to choose between the two, I'd get a HOB skimmer and skip the sump. You can get a reef octopus classic 1000 HOB that works reasonably well for around $100 give or take $25. If you do go the sump route, drilled is preferable but you can get an overflow and build your own sump for...

    Soft Coral Lighting

If you're looking to save a few bucks you can get the same Chinese LED light without the brand name on eBay for $75-$80.

    Need advice on GHA solution

I have a 92 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump. Roughly 90 lbs of live rock. Cheato and phosban reactor in sump along with some live rock. Soft coral. 3 fish - 1 inch clown, 1.5-2" bicolor dottyback, and 3" goby. 1 brittle star. I feed lightly - perhaps too lightly - once every three days or so...

    Dangers of corals?

Perhaps a better question is whether or not taking coral out of the tank to scrub them with a scrub brush is common practice. My wife saw articles like this and as a result won't let me keep zoas.

    Filter

Of course this is assuming the cascade 700 shares the same design as the 1000.

    Filter

I have (but don't use) a Cascade 1000 and while it seems to perform well, the ease of use in comparison to the Fluval 406 (which I would recommend less than the cascade) and the Filstar xp3 (a series I highly recommend) is terrible. It lacks the easy release for the outlet/inlet tubes that the...

    Plumbing question

In order to connect my overflow box to my sump I used a washer drain hose that has a rubber end and used pvc glue to attach it to the inside of the 1" bulkhead on the overflow. I'm not terribly handy. Can I trust this connection?

    Urchin kidnapped clove polyps

Quick update: I remove the coral twice from the urchin and he keeps picking it back up. He's been carrying it around for over a year now! Guess they like each other.

Ordered a Jebao DCT-6000 despite some reports of less than stellar longevity. We'll see.

    Return pump recommendation

Sorry. Link defaults to the 3000 model but there is a pull down to select the 5000 model which is what I was looking at.

    Return pump recommendation

Its rated 1350 gph. With a 4.5 ft head height and a right angle its at 850. Its my understanding that you would want the return pump to be at or a little below the capacity of the overflow so you don't drain the sump and overflow the DT. I would like to get a pump that I don't have to dial back...

    Return pump recommendation

Is this a better pump? https://www.bigalspets.com/eheim-compact-plus-pumps.html?sku=8589 Is there another cheaper brand you might recommend? Was looking at the Quiet One 5000, but seems reviews indicate this pump is less reliable.

    Return pump recommendation

I built a sump out of a 20 gallon tall on a 92 gallon display tank with an 800 gph HOB overflow box. Was wondering if a 500 gph Supreme Mag-Drive Utility Pump - Model 5 https://www.bigalspets.com/supreme-mag-drive-utility-pumps.html?sku=16604 would be a good choice for a return pump. Also...

    Several questions about tank upgrade

Currently I have a 55 g reef tank with 55 lbs live rock, duncan coral, toadstool, acan that survived on the live rock when purchased, mushrooms, clove polyps, a clownfish, royal dottyback, and a goby. No sump. I have a reef octopus 100 hob skimmer and a phosphate reactor. I am moving all this to...

    RODI and TDS

I have an RODI unit that was producing 0-5 tds water. I changed the prefilters and its now up to 10-12 TDS. Is this still and acceptable range for a reef tank with hardy coral or should I be replacing the membrane?

    Neglected tank

So, I've done 50-60% water changes every day for the last 4 days and the ammonia level is down to somewhere between 0 and .25 (very slight green tinge, but not all the way to the .25 color). Nitrites are 0. Nitrates 10 ppm (didn't test initially. Would hate to see what it was). Ph is 6.8. I...

    Neglected tank

At the risk of having someone call fish services on me, I have a confession to make. I have a 92 gallon tank with a tiger Oscar and a Chocolate Cichlid in it (I know this is pushing the stocking limits already). Anyway, I moved the tank into the garage so we could install hardwood floors. Out...

    Urchin kidnapped clove polyps

I noticed about a week ago that my clove polyps, which were flourishing, seemed to have greatly diminished in number. Yesterday I found out where they went. Apparently my tuxedo urchin decided to take them for a little ride. Can I just pull them off? Will the urchin eventually drop them. Could...
