    Reef lighting

Ocean Revive, low end kessil (160's), T5 or Red Sea 90. Which would you choose given due consideration for price and quality? Not sure the budget Kessils would be strong enough. I don't need something crazy controllable.... but do like the Kassil and Red Sea because they don't look like a giant...

Here's my tank. How do I fix it?

I will post water parameters later, but generally ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are all 0. Calcium tends to be a little low in the 375-400 range. Hammer or torch coral (not 100% which it is) hasn't been terribly happy since I got it several months ago. There's a layer of purple stuff that looks a...

    Dosing pump

So, I'm considering getting a dosing pump. Have you noticed a significant improvement after installing one? Will I regret getting a three channel pump instead of a 4? Any recommendations on a reliable pump that won't break the bank?

    Need advice on GHA solution

I have a 92 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump. Roughly 90 lbs of live rock. Cheato and phosban reactor in sump along with some live rock. Soft coral. 3 fish - 1 inch clown, 1.5-2" bicolor dottyback, and 3" goby. 1 brittle star. I feed lightly - perhaps too lightly - once every three days or so...

    Plumbing question

In order to connect my overflow box to my sump I used a washer drain hose that has a rubber end and used pvc glue to attach it to the inside of the 1" bulkhead on the overflow. I'm not terribly handy. Can I trust this connection?

    Return pump recommendation

I built a sump out of a 20 gallon tall on a 92 gallon display tank with an 800 gph HOB overflow box. Was wondering if a 500 gph Supreme Mag-Drive Utility Pump - Model 5 https://www.bigalspets.com/supreme-mag-drive-utility-pumps.html?sku=16604 would be a good choice for a return pump. Also...

    Several questions about tank upgrade

Currently I have a 55 g reef tank with 55 lbs live rock, duncan coral, toadstool, acan that survived on the live rock when purchased, mushrooms, clove polyps, a clownfish, royal dottyback, and a goby. No sump. I have a reef octopus 100 hob skimmer and a phosphate reactor. I am moving all this to...

    RODI and TDS

I have an RODI unit that was producing 0-5 tds water. I changed the prefilters and its now up to 10-12 TDS. Is this still and acceptable range for a reef tank with hardy coral or should I be replacing the membrane?

    Neglected tank

At the risk of having someone call fish services on me, I have a confession to make. I have a 92 gallon tank with a tiger Oscar and a Chocolate Cichlid in it (I know this is pushing the stocking limits already). Anyway, I moved the tank into the garage so we could install hardwood floors. Out...

    Urchin kidnapped clove polyps

I noticed about a week ago that my clove polyps, which were flourishing, seemed to have greatly diminished in number. Yesterday I found out where they went. Apparently my tuxedo urchin decided to take them for a little ride. Can I just pull them off? Will the urchin eventually drop them. Could...

    Algae problem

I have a phosban reactor on my 55 gal. I first used the phosban gfo and then switched to GFO from Kolar Filtration which I think I bought either from amazon or BRS. My phosphate levels are testing and have remained steady at .04 ppm (red sea test kit). I haven't been able to get them any lower...

    Flow

I have a standard 55 gallon with two hydor korelia 850's in it but can't seem to get rid of dead spots. Should this be enough flow and I just suck at directing them right - or do I need another wave maker? Also, I have a pom pom xenia that seems to be struggling after getting pushed over into...

    Aiptasia removal from coral frag

I bought aiptasia x to kill an anemone that hitched a ride on my live rock. That problem solved itself without the need to use aiptasia x (must have died during cycle?). Anyway, there is a LFS that has a great price on a coral I want but there are 2-3 aiptasia on the frag (not actually on the...

    Coral ID (?)

I have what I always assumed was a zoa that was on the live rock when I received it. It doesn't have any tentacles around the outside of it and never closes up. It does phosphoresce under blue light. Is this a zoa or something else? Sorry, not a very good photographer and the weeds don't help.

    Algae ID

I have three kinds of algae that are proliferating in my tank. A green fern like algae, a green leafy one, and a coarse red one. Was hoping someone might be able to ID and let me know if it's something I should be worrying about. Thanks.

    Secret to heating water?

At the risk of sounding like and idiot, impatient, or both .... Is there a quicker way to heat replacement water than putting an aquarium heater in there? I make RO water and store it in a large Rubbermaid garbage can. Using the biggest heater I have (which I "borrow" from my 92 gallon tank) it...

    Skimmer recommendations?

I bought a Red Sea Fish Pharm ARE50010 12.5-Inch Berlin Air Lift Protein Skimmer for my $55 gallon tank. Cost $45. Not surprisingly, it doesn't work very well. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a budget HOB skimmer that works? Alternatively I have a Red Sea Triple-Pass protein skimmer...

    55 gal stocking

Have a 55 gal with soft coral. 1 percula and 1 bicolor blenny. 1 peppermint shrimp. Was hoping for suggestions on how to round out the stocking. I like the six line wrasse because its colorful and is constantly moving - but as I understand can be a bully. Is there another fish that can add...

    RODI question

I have a marineland RODI unit that I've had for the better part of a decade that I just started using after a long period of sitting in the garage. After issues with algae I took a look at the RODI unit and saw a couple green flakes (algae?) in the first filter and the color changing resin...

Can't seem to get calcium up

My water was consistently reading 280 mg/L Ca (even after water changes). I started adding a two part calcium and buffer daily about a week and a half ago. My water tests today: Nitrate: 0 Nitrite: 0 Ammonia: 0 Salinity: 1.025 Ca: 360 PH: 8.4 KH: 13 Phosphate: <.25 (didn't realize API...

    Snail eggs

I have what I can only guess are snail eggs all over my glass. I don't have any fish other than a clown fish so there's nothing there to eat them. I've been holding off cleaning the glass because of them. Is there any likelihood of them hatching, or am I letting my glass get all scummy for nothing?

    Acclimating coral

I read somewhere that you're never supposed to acclimate corals together.. however I don't recall where I read that. I watched a couple youtube videos on acclimating coral - which appears no different than the process with fish which I'm well versed in - but in all the videos they acclimated...

    Q about phosphate and calcium

I have my first batch of coral coming on Wed and I'm trying to tackle to issues. First, I am having issues with green hair algae (I understand not an uncommon problem). I got a lawnmower blenny in an effort to help this problem but he's not earning his keep (at least not in the way I originally...

    KH, PH question.

I did a 20% water change yesterday. Tested KH and PH today. PH was 7.8 and KH was 8. Should I do anything to try to increase Ph or leave things alone? This a 6 week old tank.

    Best coral for beginners?

Was hoping to get some advice on hardy coral that are a little more forgiving of beginner's mistakes than most. Also, is it best to get small frags from lfs or buy online? (note: one lfs told me my newly cycled 55 gal would be great for a yellow tang and the other lfs in my area was selling live...
