I just got back into hobby, have a 10g for a betta, purchsed an aquaeon quiet flow 30 as suggested by PetSmart fish person. it realy pushed my betta around if he swims in front of it. is this too much flow for a 10g? how could I reduce the flow rate and would it be harmful for filter?

I have only had fish for a year so I am no expert by any stretch. I do know this, LISTEN TO THESE GUYS, they know what they speak. the advice they give may not always be what one wishes to hear, but listen to them and you will have a happy and exciting aquarium experience.

it does kinda look like slime mold. the tank is newly started, about 2 weeks and I have just a betta in it, and i don't over feed him. what ever it is, it popped up just about over night.

8 hours of total darkness?? the tank lights go out when I go to bed, around 10pm and I turn on room lights (not tank lights) around 0430 when I get up, is that too little darkness for them?

the general advice here is leave the pH alone, the fish will adapt unless you have super sensitive fish which requires lower pH. my pH 8.5, I have neon tetra, guppy, gourami, cory cats and betta, none are bothered by the pH.

leave your pH as is, mine runs 8.5. your fish will adjust to the pH and will be fine
