    angelfish

If you can't see the breeding tubes, just look for the one chasing everything away from the eggs; that's the female.

    5 gallon Ideas

I have a 5.5 gallon with Red Cherry Shrimp and 5x Galaxy Rasboras, aka Celestial Pearl Danios. Stick to nano fish if possible, but a few male guppies would also be ok. The shrimp have a low bioload, so you can have at least 8 with room for breeding in addition to a small amount of fish in that...

    Drip acc

The mechanism is cheap. It's just a small length of airline tubing that can go from the tank to the bucket and an airline control valve. Should cost you next to nothing if you already have airline tubing. I've done the knot method before, and it's not terribly difficult. You just tie several...

    Best corys?

I've only had Panda's, Julii and Albino, and I would say the Julii's have been the most beneficial. They clean algae from my rocks and leaves, something my other species have never done. I have a rock cave in my 55G that had a brown tinge to the surface after several months, and wiping it with...

Are Angel Fish Peacful Community Fish?

They are well-behaved for a cichlid. They do tend to posture and give short chase to fish they don't want around them on occasion, but it's harmless. Mine just laid eggs last week and they were extra aggressive to the tank mates, but the female never once actually bit another fish, she just...

    Fresh-Water Community Fish "Show Stopper ;) "

Lower water level, add crickets and toss an Archerfish in there!

So bummed :( my angelfish has turned mean!

I have two tanks each with a pair of B. Rams and Angelfish in them, and this is common behavior. It's just posturing for the most part. I've never seen an actual bite where damage occurred. They're cichlids, so you can expect this to happen. In fact, I'm pleasantly surprised that this is the...

    NitrAtes ???

If you don't have a high-tech setup that grows plants fast to the point where you're having to trim them constantly, you're not going to see them export nitrates at a noticeable level. You may have some success with non-aquatic plants dipping their roots in the water, since C02 is readily...

    Too much current from filters?

I've had this filter-hack going for a while now on all my Aquaclear's with 100% success: Filter Currents: A Betta's Worst Nightmare

    Favorite fish with Cherry shrimp?

My fancy tail male guppies are too busy playing around swimming to notice my shrimplets. They're not opportunistic eaters like the pregnant females that are constantly on the hunt for food. My males only eat when I feed them, unlike a lot of fish that are constantly scrounging around. 5x flame...

    nitrite HELP

Why do people insist on lowering nitrites in a fish-in cycle? It's a process that is reactionary. You chose to put fish in before the biological filter was in place, which is fine, but you're now accepting DAILY water changes regardless of whether you think you need them or not. The fishes...

    Shrimp tank

Not at all. They're the most active and interesting species I have in all of my tanks. I enjoy watching them more than my larger tanks. With that said, you don't really know how many you have until you throw some algae wafers in there. They all come out to eat, which makes you realize just how...

    Shrimp tank

A couple hundred shrimp easily. My 10 gallon has over a hundred of them and I have no water quality issues. I have 3x male fancy tail guppies and a black mystery snail with them. I can't say how many rainbows though since I'm not familiar with them, but the shrimp you can go nuts with in regards...

    Adding Bolivian Rams

I picked out two pairs from a tank that appeared to be stocked with full-grown adults to put into two different tanks. In fact they were expensive because of their age. It seemed easy since there was a pair on one side where one was visibly larger than the other, and another pair resembling the...

    water change question?

1 PWC per day should be fine for a fish-in cycle until it completes. I wouldn't try dilluting/removing nitrites from a tank that is cycling anyway. The water is safe for 24 hours after you condition it each day. You only need to be considering back to back (to back to back) changes when your...

    Sinking pellet for Dwarf Cichlid

I'm not really sure about the brand. I bought a small canister from a Petland next to my office here for $4 USD. They sink instantly. Sometimes a bubble will form from surface tension and it will hold it, but not for very long, and you can just tap it with your finger to make it sink. They are...

    Sinking pellet for Dwarf Cichlid

I don't treat my Rams as a cichlid when it comes to food. They're a dwarf species and can be fed any variety of tropical fish foods. In fact I think this increases their appeal as a community fish. They fit right in with most any non-cichlid, diet and all.

    Aquaclear 50

I have two 50's on my 55. Don't do a single larger filter on a 4 foot tank. A pair of 50's is good enough. Edit for clarification: On a longer tank, you'll end up with a lot of dead spots in the water column due to the lack of water movement if you run a single filter on it. Anyone that's...

    What to do with fry?!!!!

I tried vacuuming out fry during a water change to move to my display tank. I was expecting the parents to eat some of them but they don't touch any of them oddly, so I had to move a bunch to my main tank as live snacks. I've since moved all the females out. I wanted to replenish the tanks stock...

    Sinking pellet for Dwarf Cichlid

Mine like to steal shrimp pellets from the group and take them to a cave or another part of the tank to consume. They are too big for them to swallow, so they either peck at it or pull the entire pellet in their mouth and break it up inside to swallow pieces (not even sure how they do it, but...

    Unseal behaver (angelfish)

My fish get mad at me when I do water changes. I don't think it's unusual.

    Easy sand?

All of the bags I've purchased (from the same store) were always off-white. I wouldn't call it a bit dark in the least, and I live 15 minutes from Siesta Key where the beach sand looks like sugar. It looks like beach sand to me, just a bit more on the beige side.

    Mystery Snail diet

Both species will enjoy some zucchini. Just remove the skin and seeds and freeze a bunch of pieces for later (thaw it out in tank water before feeding). My Otto's never go for it right away, so give them about a day to start munching on it. The snails will go to town on it as soon as they notice...

    Mystery Snail?

Algae wafers don't work for me. Once the fish gobble up the food up top, they go down to the bottom and hog the wafer. Blanched zucchini works because the fish don't care for it. Your results may vary.
