    Best rock used for Africans

Mixed reviews here...have been told by many to use lace rock; others just your basic river rock/shale. Any one have any buffering advantages? Is this even needed if you buffer your water each time at the time of a water change? Also heard you need tons of caves to keep them happy.

    Suggested supplements for Malwai cichlids

I was told by someone to simply add bicarb to increase ph and epson salt to provide magnesium. The local fish store is telling me I need to trace elements in there and salt mix. What are your suggestions?

    Aquascaping on bare glass

I'm looking to do about a 1/2" over all but had planned on adding this after the rocks were in. I'm not so concerned with them coming down. I'm not really planning on doing too much stacking. It's the rock physically on the glass that concerns me.

    Aquascaping on bare glass

Is it ok to stack rocks on a bare bottom tank vs having an 1" or 2 of sand/gravel for cushion?

Suggested stocking for 90 gallon semi-aggressive community tank

In the process of giving my 90 gallon a complete overhaul...new substrate, live plants, etc. I am honestly done with the "monster cichlids" and the mess they make. I am looking for something a little different....more volume of fish, but smaller, and compatible. Maybe even a school or two of...

For Sale: Large Cichlids - Staten Island

Going to be changing up my tank into something a little more simple vs. these monsters. LOL! Anyone interested in taking them off my hands? Tilapia Buttikoferi - 5-6" Red Devil - 6" Texas Cichlid - 6" Jack Demsey -4" Pair of Salvini - male 4" - female 2" Pair of Convicts - male 2-3" - female...

    Best substrate?

Are you using the white or brown filter sand? Any issues with algae or diatoms?

    Best substrate?

@ Mebbid - Where do you buy these snails from? Are there any worries about overpopulation as I've heard this is a major concern in general with fresh water snails. How many are recommended to start off with (per gallon)? PS - do you agree with going with a sand substrate vs. gravel? I've had...

    Best substrate?

I've read alot that people are using fine sand for their freshwater aquariums now. Supposedly it is easier to maintain from a waste perspective, as most of the crap either sits on the surface, or gets taken away from the "current" into the filter. I have used play sand from Home Depot in many...

    Breeding Rainbow cichlids

I'm going to try and give it a whirl with these guys. I have what I believe to be a male and a female, who are now residing in a 20 high aquarium....and have the whole tank to themselves. This is very shy and shiddish fish. For the most part, they hide in one particular cave....mostly...

    Correct steps in breeding Salvini's

Last one (Multispinosa) is a Rainbow Cichlid, yes? Half of the others are coming up in searches, and definitely not available where I am. The others I have come up with nothing on.

    Correct steps in breeding Salvini's

Strangely enough when I search those three fish, I get pictures of convicts. Any common names? And are these readily available?

    Correct steps in breeding Salvini's

Lol @ Freak! I have to agree... So here's the question. Assuming that what I have is all I can have ....meaning no room....what do you suggest? I am in the process of setting up a 20 long and 29 gallon as grow out tanks. That's pretty much all I have room for until further notice. Thinking...

    Correct steps in breeding Salvini's

I've seen what you are saying in some books I have. If he is 3" or so, what is the smallest female that you would recommend? What is the smallest size in which they can breed? Are these fish smart enough to swim through a hole just big enough for them? Obviously there has to be a significant...

    Correct steps in breeding Salvini's

No. Lol !!! That was taken before he did her in. That was of the female and the fry. Sorry....probably should have mentioned that. Nice catch though....

    Correct steps in breeding Salvini's

On that note, do you feel a 20 gallon long aquarium is suitable as a grow out tank for the fry? I had planned on going bigger, but I already have the tank...and it figured it was somewhat decent. Also, sponge filter good for this or should I grab myself an auxillary one for quick clean...

    Correct steps in breeding Salvini's

My timing and staying on top of this was very poor. I have about 20 babies max at this point, and no additional tank set up. I am in the process of getting my 20 long set up as a grow out tank. I'll throw a sponge filter on it and be done with it. Hopefully I will do this in time to actually...

    Correct steps in breeding Salvini's

One more question....which parent should be left alone with the fry? It seems both are great parents. Right now I have my widowed male with the fry and he will not leave their side.....mind you, in an aquarium with no other fish.

    Correct steps in breeding Salvini's

I've noticed a definite difference in the behavior of these fish vs other cichlids. A week or so after spawning, the male literally beats the female to the point of death. Following the first spawn, I managed to save the female from the clutches of death by using a divider in the tank. The male...

    Almost dead fish...

Is it possible to save a fish that is probably 95% dead? My pair of salvini recently bred while I was away. I've read that the female and male need to be separated once the fry are free swimming, as the male will typically try to get her to breed again, and get violent about it if she doesn't...

What to do when your fish spawn...

I have a mated pair of salvini's - purchased from a store who accidentally had them sexed and bred. No activity of its kind has even remotely started since I took them home. LOL !!! I also have a second aquarium with juvenile salvani's....waiting to see what will develop. My other two pairs...

What to do when your fish spawn...

I have a few tanks set up with some different pairs of cichlids. I've read that at the time your fry can eat on their own, it is best to not only remove them from the aquarium, but to also separate the parents. This supposedly protects the female from being killed due to her resisting to spawn...

Depressed fish in 20 gallon tank

I think those would not only get the salvini's out of hiding, but I'm pretty sure the Hyphessobrycon anisitsi would wind up dead quickly. You don't think that would be the case?
