    Fish id

If it looks like this, then yes, it is a Pseudotropheus Socolofi. Mine is the tank alpha and does a good job at keeping the peace. Of course the only Pseudotropheus female in my tank is an Acei and he doesn't seem to like her that way. It's usually peaceful, but knows how to flex should the...

    Best cichlid food?

I'm a personal fan of Xtreme pellets. The fish absolutely devour every bit that I feed them.

Do all yellow lab have back on top fin?

Some have the black in their pectoral and dorsal fins and some don't. There are stripeless and also those with an absence of black (a type of albino where stripes appear white).

Opinion needed. Air stone or not?

I have 2 of them in my main Cichlid tank that are both on the PM timer. I personally don't like the looks of them in my tanks, but they do look ok in others (not in yours BTW).

Need advice - Changing Gravel to Sand

That pretty much goes along with what I've seen for the FX5. It seems like flow restriction is the chief cause for micro bubbles. I don't have one myself (none of my tanks are a size that justifies an FX5) but I researched them when I saw a used one for sale for $175. I know that many of the...

Need advice - Changing Gravel to Sand

You would be better off getting an FX5 IMO. 2x406 would be 766 GPH at $340 and a single FX5 is 925 GPH at $240. You could augment the FX5 with a HOB (AquaClear 110, Emperor 400, etc) which would add 400-500 GPH for $50-$60 and put you right at 10x filtration for still less than the 2 406s.

    Yellow Lab Bully

Do a search for "Soda Bottle Trap" and throw an algae wafer or something in the trap and you will have a trapped lab in under 10 minutes. Even if it looks too big to fit in, they will squeeze in. I like using a 2 liter bottle for the task (more space = less stress) and I seem to catch...

    Changing to sand this weekend.

Best way I've found to initially clean sand is via bucket/water dumping. Then, when most of the cloudiness has gone away, I use a net that the sand can't pass through (I.e. - brine net) and run it under a faucet for the final rinse. It does not get rid of all the cloudiness, but most of it...

And breed, they will... I do like the Kribensis I have, but to be honest, I wish all the ones I have were all female.

    Possible additions

Yep. That was the thread, thanks for digging it up. I still need to read your guide, then I can point to it for reference next time. :D. I'll have to set some time aside between tank maintenance this weekend.

    Possible additions

Looks like you have a bit of room to play, much unlike the threads where someone lists 20 fish in a 30 gallon and ask what more they can add. You might consider looking into an Afra variety, which would add some nice contrast to what you already have. I have had luck with them cohabiting with...

    Tank mates?

If you do decide to paint anything you are adding to an aquarium, make sure the paint is aquarium safe. Krylon paint is about all I would trust using.

    interested in African cichlids

The inch per gallon rule is really a bad rule for larger fish. For tetras, gourami, etc, it can be used as a good measure, but as you can imagine, 12 1" neons are far less than 1 12" Cichlid in terms of space requirements. If you can swing it, I would recommend a minimum of a 55 gallon tank...

New 29 gallon setup, help with cichlids!

I had a single Labidochromis and a synodontis in a 29 for a few years, and even the 2 alone ended up stunted. They never grew to their full potential, but they are still alive in one of my larger tanks, though they are both now bug-eyed and dwarfed. I currently keep only Kribensis in the 29...

    Circulation Pump.

As others mentioned, landscaping shops are the best place to go if you don't have rock available in the outdoors. The rock in this photo was 13 cents per pound at a local company, and there's 120 lbs of it in there. Around $15.60 + tax makes for a lot of hiding places. Good luck with your search.

    Cichlid ID please

Tough to tell with the lighting, but you might google Labidochromis Hongi and see if that is what you have.

Name that fish - number 2!

Ah... I've only encountered the all white (albino) versions of those in the stores here. Thanks for the correction.

Name that fish - number 2!

An albino variation of a Labidochromis Caeruleus (yellow lab) with the absence of yellow instead of the absence of black (more common) would be my first guess, but the black tail is unique.

let's see those 75-200 gallon African Cichlid landscapes

Foundation + 1. Meaning a first generation after a wild pair in captivity if I remember correctly. And I agree, those are gorgeous fish.

    my new project........

I'm personally a fan of painted black. Adds a lot of depth to the tank and helps hide most cord/filter components (except for a certain company that uses green power heads). It is fairly easy to remove the paint if you ever decide you don't want it.

    Another epidemic?

You have made a lot of changes in the past few weeks (removing Anubias, adding driftwood, rearranging). Any chance the Oxygen/Carbon Dioxide balance went out of whack? Since you removed the plants some weeks ago, I would not think that was the cause, unless it just took a while for the effects...

    Labidochromis Spawning

They were still going at it and on the rocks this time, so I was able to get a little better shot (can even see the eggs). Added some music to it as well so you don't have to listen to the filters. Labidochromis Caeruleus "Yellow Lab" Cichlids Spawning (Part 2) - YouTube

    ID for... A yellow lab?

Hard to tell with the speed of the fish and the hue of the photo. In person, does it look more orange than yellow (red zebra?)? Pink eyes (albino Lab)?

    Another epidemic?

Then hang a big "YMCA" sign above the tank. :P Though I do agree that it would lessen the aggression. Right now my Alpha is a Pseudotropheus and I won't get any females to help keep his aggression under control.

    Catfish for a Malawi setup

Synodontis Multipunctatas (aka Cuckoo Catfish) are great, but can be troublesome during Cichlid mating. They don't get huge either, which is a plus for me.
