First attempt @ Planting a Tank

Definitely, add it now as there are very little rules when it comes to java ferns. A nice fast growing tall plant like cabomba can work as well. What type of substrate are you using? Plants like a small grain gravel so their roots can take hold. Another question is what is your current lighting?

    Orandas and Pleco

I wouldn't. Pleco's enjoy warmer temps than goldies do.

    pleco ID

Looks like a hyptostomus sp (L346) to me. It's not uncommon for mislabeling of cats to take place since there are so many of them that have almost identical coloration and finnage that it's hard to tell them apart.

After a fishless cycle, how many fish to add?

It depends on your tank size. Your substrate and decor will also get saturated with beneficial bacteria over time. A group of small tetras is usually a good start.

    PLECO HELP for a newbie

They may not get any bloodworms if you have an active community tank. Try dropping wafers and/or pellets after lights out. You can also slice cucumber and zucchini for a nice treat.

    First time aquascaping

I wish my tank looked as good when I first started in planted. I didn't see anyone address your 0 ammonia issue. This is one of the many reasons I delved into planted... no ammonia or nitrite issues because the plants gobble it up. How cool is that? I liked elwaine's "aquascape" explanation...

    90 Gallon planted aquarium

Ouch, high light and no CO2. DIY is not efficient on that sized tank so that's not an option. You'd do well to lower your lighting until you can get your hands on a full CO2 setup.

    Desirable hitchhikers?

Wow, that is amazing! My guess is that they are rasboras or danios. I've seen similar occurrences with other hobbyists. Oh, glad to see you back Liz. :)

pro's and con's of planted tanks

There is no "down side" to planted aquaria. It's the FW equivalent to a SW reef in that it's as close to "natural" as you can get.

Added Plant Fertilizer - Have Dirty Water

Ah, that explains it. flourite is a nutrient rich plant substrate, not so much a dosable plant fertilizer. Flourite is probably the dustiest substrate that I know of and is better used with an empty tank. It will settle over time, I suggest using some activated carbon to trap excess particles...

Trying to build something, a babbling post and catching up.

You are really getting on my nerves Joe, just what do you hope to accomplish by setting my ego back over and over again? :) In the meantime, I've had good success in treating hair algae with additional doses of potassium.

Help! Very Important Betta is sick!

Sorry to hear about Lucky not feeling well. As you mention, he is showing signs of swim bladder disease (listing, sinking and rolling). The other symptoms (darting) are usually signs of a high nitrate/nitrite issue and/or a ph/temp imbalance. Did he exhibit all of the symptoms you mentioned...

Trying to build something, a babbling post and catching up.

I prepared myself for reading your rantings by rigging a coffee urn with a pneumatic dispenser (hate having to get up during a good story). After reading through your posts and viewing the pics (nice touch to continue posting pics with the palm cam) and I came to the following conclusion: Of...
