    Convict fry

My Convict has now got her 5th/6th batch of eggs in as many weeks, conditions in tank must be good or I guess they wouldn't keep laying as they are, it's fascinating watching the eggs change and finally hatch, however each time they've hatched I get to the point of them becoming free swimming...

    Changing to cichlids

So right or not I've got a breeder tank with heater, filter that has been filled with media out of main tank filter, water put in the breeder out of main tank as well as a couple of rocks and plants out of main tank also, I've then transferred the pipe containing the convict wrigglers to this...

    Changing to cichlids

Wow well it's all happening now, the eggs seem to have what I guess is gonna be fry tail coming out of it just looks like single small hair and they are all how can I put it....sort of vibrating and moving about in a random fashion so I'm guessing they are in process of hatching, amazing, such a...

    Changing to cichlids

Here's a picture of the convict eggs, the brown spots are the eggs, wasn't sure if were fertilised but can now see a tiny black spot developing on each egg, I'm aware I may have aggression issues but you can't deny it's fascinating to observe new life happening in front of you, what do you think...

    Changing to cichlids

Hi All, so I've another question re my convicts, as I said before the female is spending a lot of time in the pipe I buried and now when I look in the open end there is as lot of what I presume are her eggs, they are probably about 1mm in size and are a light beige colour, would that be what you...

    Changing to cichlids

Well there's the convict pair plus another female convict. The shark which I'm fairly sure is called red tailed but not gonna labour the point. Male and female Aauratus plus their 2 fry. Maybe 5 to 7 yellow lab, hard to be sure without doing a full count when tank all emptied as way too many...

    Changing to cichlids

I'm not doubting for a minute that they will get aggressive in protecting fry but then most fish will do the same whether cichlids or others, I sometimes wonder if it's a bit like the tale of a swan being able to break a mans arm, everyone has heard the stories but no one ever seems to actually...

    Changing to cichlids

Cheers Andrew, so only a few days for eggs to hatch then I guess she will be holding in her mouth until they're ready to free swim? It's surprised me how quickly she has accepted the pipe I've put in as somewhere safe to hang out, I blocked the one end off completely with a stone rammed in solid...

    Changing to cichlids

Well the pipe I buried seems to be having the desired effect, the female has been busy cleaning out the bits of gravel by spitting them out and the male then collects them from by the entrance and moves them away, I've an idea I've actually witnessed them mating so if I'm right, I seem to think...

Hope these can be seen ok, there's obviously a full tank shot, not many fish about I reckon they're camera shy, there's the pic of one of the Auratus fry that are out loads now so reckon they are gonna be safe now, the paired convicts in the one picture are the pair that had fry that vanished...

Yes and totally aquarium safe, actually it wasn't in there long as I found a place I could get some fantastic rocks that are full of holes , much more natural, and got them at a good price , as the convict fry didn't make it this time I'm gonna be doing a big clean and re scape of the tank by...

    Changing to cichlids

If any of the other fish have a mouth big enough to swallow the auratus fry then they are not gonna be safe, my 2 are still keeping under cover most of the time but getting a little braver as they get bigger, fingers crossed they survive as I think they are great looking fish, good luck with...

    Changing to cichlids

Well the fry didn't last long, no sign of any at all today, dunno if eaten by the mother or by others but all vanished, at least I know they can get to the point of actually getting the fry so better luck next time, it's a strange position to be in when I had the fry, on the one hand I'm over...
