    What went wrong?

I did remember to use dechlorinator! That was something I always worried about forgetting, somehow I got myself so paranoid about it, I always remembered!

    What went wrong?

Upon reading it again, it did kind of sound like I burst out the 409! haha! But nah, I just figured I'm changing practically all of the water...I'm already here, why not just do it all like normal anyway?

    What went wrong?

Sorry! ha! When I "cleaned," I just meant like normal - scrubbing the sides with tank water, vacumming the gravel, stuff like that. The only difference between this and my normal routine of "cleaning" was that I simply did a much larger water change to go with it. Thank you all so much for the...

    What went wrong?

Thank you so much! I have a 20 gallon tank. We don't use anything on our water at home - it just comes out of the tap the way it is! As far as kh and gh, is this something I can test for at home? Rather, is that something I should have been monitoring all along? I don't wish anything on...

    What went wrong?

Sorry I've been out of pocket for a couple of weeks! Unfortunately, I have returned with bad news. I woke up this morning to find our "Fishy" had passed away overnight. (refresher - I'm a complete and total ignorant newbie at this! My daughter received a baby fantail goldfish for her...

    My first API test results!

I'm glad I got a test kit too! I'm glad you mentioned the higher pH - I don't know why I didn't think to do that test too. I guess I was just thinking, "Oh, I got 7.6, I'm in good shape!" I'll get right on that this morning!

    My first API test results!

    More Beginner Questions! (re: cycling)

Of course its a requirement! ha! If only I knew how to "turn it off" and be objective for a change! Thank goodness I've got some good people here to do that part for me! On the flip side of the pet spectrum, I have two sick cats here. It appears they both have a cold - as luck would have it...

    More Beginner Questions! (re: cycling)

Its so comforting to know I'm doing okay! My pets are my babies just as much as my own child! Everyone gets "worried about" equally in this house! ha!

    More Beginner Questions! (re: cycling)

Thanks so much! I had read somewhere (completely forgot the source) that ammonia is not removed, but simply detoxified. The bottle itself says, "removes" so I guess that's what was throwing me off!!! I feel so much better now! You know, this kind of reminds me of when my daughter was a...

    More Beginner Questions! (re: cycling)

Oh, thank you! I'll do that, then! My husband should like that - I think he's been dying to feed him because he keeps mentioning that every time he walks by, Fishy "comes up to him!" I keep bursting his bubble by telling him, "NO!" haha

    More Beginner Questions! (re: cycling)

Whoops! Not so fast! More questions! I just tested my tap water for ammonia - 0.25 there as well. So I treated some tap with Prime and took another test - 0.25 again. What am I doing wrong? I read the instruction booklet! Bottle 1, Bottle 2, the room is well-lit, I don't have any vision...

    More Beginner Questions! (re: cycling)

Oh I should have mentioned that about the pellets! They were rather large, that's why I gave Fishy only one. When I passed by later, it had swollen to the size of a pencil eraser and lodged in one of the plants. Fishy wasn't eating it, so I removed it. I didn't feed him at all the second day...

    More Beginner Questions! (re: cycling)

Good morning, everyone! Everything seems to be going well! Every time I ask my 3-year old daughter what our fantail's name is, she replies, "Fishy," so I guess that's now his name! So, Fishy is now starting his 3rd day in his 20g uncycled tank. Thanks to all of the advice I've gotten here so...

    My first API test results!

Right! I now know how the process works - just wanting to get the feedback to make sure everything is going swell! But what's Bahamas?

    My first API test results!

Just got back from the big city shoppin'! Found the API test and Prime no sweat! So here's my first test results: pH - 7.6 Ammonia - 0.25ppm Nitrite and Nitrate - both zero So does that sound pretty good? It was suggested to me to do a 50% water change until I got my kit to be on the safe...

Goldfish as a gift...in an uncycled tank!

Whew! Thank goodness! I was scared there for a minute! haha! I am going for my big trip this morning!!! I was able to find someone else to go with me, this one's willing to do the drive, too! Hooray! For the gas money I've saved, I can buy more stuff! Once I get my goodies, I'll post a...

Goldfish as a gift...in an uncycled tank!

Oh no...I'm glad you asked that because I have absolutely no idea how many gallons it turns over. Now I have some homework to do! Let's see - I bought the Tetra Aquarium Starter Kit 20. The instructions for the filter itself are rather generic and for several models. It simply does not say...

Goldfish as a gift...in an uncycled tank!

Yeah, I noticed that too - the AquaSafe didn't specifically mention ammonia. So I'll try not to worry too much about "fixing" an ammonia issue until I know for sure I have one! Baby steps, Midgiepooh! Baby steps! My traveling partner just totally BAILED on me and our trip to "dat dere big...

Goldfish as a gift...in an uncycled tank!

Oh really? So if the AquaSafe should take care of ammonia, then do I just have crummy test strips? Its now my personal mission to get a test kit! I'm going to see if maybe I can up my trip by a day or so! I'm getting excited over here! I honestly don't know why anyone would come here for...

Goldfish as a gift...in an uncycled tank!

Right now I am using Tetra Aquasafe. On the back of the bottle, it says, "substances in tap water (like chlorine and heavy metals) that are dangerous to fish are removed or neutralized..." It doesn't mention ammonia - unless its a "heavy metal" (psst...I didn't do very well in chemistry class...

Goldfish as a gift...in an uncycled tank!

I just returned from the pet shop! No Prime or Amquel to be seen! Ugh! Why does my shop have absolutely nothing that's been recommended to me? LOL I'm still going to get the good stuff when I do my big trip on the 30th!!!! Anyway, I didn't want to leave the place empty-handed in case an...
