I've heard a lot lately that putting using carbon as part of your media filtration is bad. I don't use it, but am still not sure WHY its bad?

I was just wondering if it would be okay to put a sand sifting starfish in my refugium in my sump. It's got about 4in of live sand, and a hunk of chaeto. I just feel like that's a whole lot of sand not to get sifted though and aerated. Opinions?
