    Always pH

Just a tidbit of information on pH and why it is always pH and not PH, ph, or Ph. pH derives from the German phrase “potenz Hydrogen” meaning the concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution. Since nouns are always capitalized in German, it’s always pH, even at the beginning of a sentence.

    pH , always pH

I'll mention the topic of pH one more time, partly because I'm a scientist and partly because I guess I'm a bit anal about it. pH is always pH, never PH or ph or Ph. The reason is, pH comes from the German "potenz Hydrogen" and in German nouns are always capitalized, and besides, chemical...

    Fasting Fish

There is lots of anecdotal information on fasting fish - not feeding them once a week or every other day or on weekends. The reasons given are cleaning out digestive tract or letting the fish clean up scraps. But no evidence is cited, just stories, so I perused the scientific literature and ...

    pH, always pH

I hope I'm not being too academic here but I'd like to offer an explanation as to why pH is always pH, not PH, ph, or Ph. The symbols come from the German phrase potenz hydrogen, which refers to the concentration of hydrogen ions. Since chemical elements are always capitalized, it is always pH...

    Acrylic vs Glass Tanks

Just thought I’d compare glass vs acrylic tanks as I’ve had both but got rid of all but one glass tank; I have 18 acrylic ones. Here’s why: Acrylic tanks are half the weight of glass, transmit 22% more light, are 17 times as strong as glass, have no metal frames, and can easily be drilled...

    Killifish Eggs

I received a packet of killifish eggs in peat moss but I don't know how to hatch them. I've looked it up but I get vague answers like "leave them in peat moss for 6 months", "wet them and they will hatch immediately", "keep them cool", "keep them warm", etc. Anybody know how to treat killifish...

    Discus tank plants

I've not had much luck with plants in discus tanks, presumably because the water is 86 degrees, I guess. Can anyone suggest plants and/or plant suppliers for discus tanks? Thanks

    Free Wet-Dry Filter/Sump

I have a used wet-dry filter/sump with the overflow, bioballs, hoses, etc. I will give away for the cost of shipping. It is used and water-stained but perfectly useable - no leaks, no cracks, etc. it is 21" long, 15" high and 9.5 " wide. I used it on a 100 gallon tank. If you can make good use...

    Breeding Discus

I've bred Angels, cichlids, tetras, rainbows, and others but am stumped by discus. I've had a couple of pairs lay eggs but then eat them after a few days. I understand it is difficult to raise discus fry without the parents, but can it be done? Any advice from experienced discus breeders would...

    Acrylic vs Glass

For those of you who may be wondering, just a word about acrylic vs. glass tanks. I have 20 tanks, only two are glass. IMHO, acrylic tanks are far better. They are much lighter weight, don't leak, and nearly impossible to crack. Only minor downsides are: they can scratch if you rub gravel...
