    LED Suggestions

Really? You think all I'd need to do is upgrade my lighting and go with low-light plants? Hmmm. Maybe this won't be as crazy after all.

    LED Suggestions

My current substrate is sand, with a handful of large rocks and a long piece of driftwood. I've got a Golden Gourami, a handful of Panda Corys, a Bristlenose Pleco, a few Silver Flying Foxes, and a pair of Platies. I'm running a Aqueon Quietflow 55.

    LED Suggestions

I would think I'd have to, ultimately.

    LED Suggestions

Good points. One thing I'm realizing is that it's a huge task to switch over to planted without having a spare tank.

    LED Suggestions

I'm pretty comfortable with weekly maintenance at this point. That's likely what I'll stick to. I probably will go with CO2.

    LED Suggestions

I've got a standard 55g that is currently unplanted. Looking towards planting before too long and my first step is to upgrade my lighting. I want to move into LED's and I'm looking for product suggestions. What do you use? What do you wish you had? What's ideal? What's the best value? Go!

    Addressing Algae

Thanks. The tank isn't planted, so I haven't been testing for PO4. I'm not familiar with RODI units or RO water. Help?

    Addressing Algae

Thanks for this. I think I will reduce the light exposure to ~10 hrs, see what happens. I've been doing weekly WC's of ~25%. My tank is not planted, so I haven't been testing for PO4. NO3 levels have been relatively low (~10 ppm).

    Addressing Algae

I've had a recent unwanted boom in algae growth and on the lookout for creative solutions. What does everyone do to keep their algae in check, aside from merely scraping the glass constantly? Parameters: 55 gal, low light (12 hrs/day), 1 bushy nose pleco, 2 Platies, 1 golden gourami, 6 Cories...

    Lighting recommendations for 55g

Yes, I'm planning a planted tank, but I'm not interested in high maintenance CO2 set ups. Your LED solution is intriguing for its scalability.

    Lighting recommendations for 55g

Any lighting recommendations for a 55g freshwater tank? I'd like to stay relatively low maintenance in my planting (no CO2 systems) for now. A kid at the LFS pointed me toward the Deep Blue 248, but all the Amazon reviews are terrible. All ideas will be considered. Thanks.

    T5HO Question

While reading in preparation for making the switch to a planted aquarium, I saw an odd bit of info with no explanation. It was a recommendation to replace T5 bulbs every 6-12 months. I've had a T5 over my unplanted tank for 12 months now. In fact, it's second hand, so who knows how long it's...

    Restocking Ideas...

Good point. "I don't care" was probably the wrong language. I'm not attached to these fish. They were gifts from some friends who didn't know they had the potential to unbalance my tank. I felt compelled to keep them, but I have no emotional attachment.

    Restocking Ideas...

Kulih loaches are very interesting. I'll have to think about that one.

    Restocking Ideas...

I have a 55g fully cycled tank that needs restocking. Currently, 2 neon tetras (which I don't care about), 2 Platies (which I also don't care about), a bristle nose pleco (which I'd like to keep), and a rhino goby (which I kind of like). In restocking, I'd like to center on Gourami & Cories...

    Bottom Dwellers

I'm on the lookout for various types of bottom dwellers. I've tried Cories on a couple occasions with no success. Looking for alternatives. 55gal planted with perfect parameters. Thanks!

    How to feed Cories?

How often do you suggest feeding?

    How to feed Cories?

I've lost one pack of 6 Cories previously, and a couple more just recently. I'd like not to lose more. I suspect my feeding is the culprit. What's the best way to feed my Cories (3 Juliis, 1 Panda)? I've also got 5 Platies & 1 Bristlenose Pleco swimming about. I'm looking for a clear plan -...

How to get driftwood to sink?

That's a great idea. Trouble is, this piece of driftwood is 3' long! Hahaha! I think I may have to tie it off.

How to get driftwood to sink?

A few weeks ago I picked up a gnarly piece of driftwood from the "wild," hoping to insert it into my 55g tank. I soaked it for a couple weeks to draw out the tannins and then placed it in the aquarium. Now, my question: How do you get driftwood to sink?

Duly noted. I may move that direction long-term, but would prefer to go there gradually.

4 Dead in Last Week! Help!

Thanks, everyone, for contributing! Here's my plan. I'll reduce flake feeding to once daily at 2 mins. I'll cut sinking wafers into quarters and drop two quarters in per day. We'll see how that shakes out.

4 Dead in Last Week! Help!

OK. It seems the consensus is I'm overfeeding. Is that accurate? Any recommendations on an appropriate amount, given the fish currently in there?

4 Dead in Last Week! Help!

OK. I'm settled on the cleaning question. I'm convinced I've been on the right track with weekly WC's and substrate vacuuming half & half. I feed twice daily with flakes, a 5 min feed each time. I drop one sinking wafer each morning. This, I admit, I could reduce. Ammonia levels have been...
