Are my Nitrites too high or do I need to wait it out?

I spoke too soon. 24 hours later there’s a little Ammonia left in (0.25 ppm) and 2 ppm of Nitrites. I’ll just keep going until it can get rid of both within 24 hours?

Are my Nitrites too high or do I need to wait it out?

Thanks for your helpful response. It looks like I’m going for option 3, as I went to make a big water change tonight but tested the water before and Ammonia and Nitrites are both 0 now! Was starting]to think I’d never see the day! I dosed Ammonia again and will check tomorrow to see if...

Are my Nitrites too high or do I need to wait it out?

Maxed out nitrites? Yes, sorry, another cycling help post… Ammonia, dosed to 2 ppm, has been vanishing within 24 hours for over a week now. But how high are my Nitrates here? I know any Nitrites means it’s not cycled. But if it’s above 5 ppm, should I do a large water change? If it’s 2 ppm...

    Fishless cycle - stalled?

That’s good to know. I’ll stop testing for Nitrates for now, and will do a water change tonight. Will concentrate on the Ammonia and Nitrites. Thanks

    Fishless cycle - stalled?

Hi all, I have been working on a fishless cycling on a new 55gallon tank, dosing ammonia. Started on Oct 1st so I know it’s only been just over 3 weeks but I’m wondering if I’ve stalled the process. Set up the tank with Dr Tim’s Nitrifying Bacteria, and dosed Ammonia to 2ppm. I didn’t see...

    Dust in new 10gallon tank

I have set up a 10 gallon tank to raise the fry from my bigger tank (or at least separate the males) Its been cycling for 3 weeks with 2 guppies and tetra safe start. During the last few days we've noticed some grey dust all over the ornaments. Can you guys advise what is causing it and how to...

Nitrates through the roof! Cycle done already?!

Thanks for the response. I tested the tap water last week and thankfully it showed 0 nitrates. The high nitrates were definately from my friends water. In terms of real plants, I have java moss in there but that's it. What other live plants could I put in there with just gravel and the basic...

Nitrates through the roof! Cycle done already?!

Its now been two weeks since I started the tank. I read on another forum that is using Safe Start, I should leave everything for two weeks so it can do its thing. Yesterday I did a 30% water change. Nitrates are still 160+ as I expected. But also Ammonia is 0.50 and Nitrites are 0.50, which I...

Nitrates through the roof! Cycle done already?!

As if there wasn't enough to worry about, I came home to find at least 4 guppy fry swimming around. I'm shocked as the two guppies didn't look pregnant at all! Now I have to do large water changes without sucking up some fry in the process. Yikes!

Nitrates through the roof! Cycle done already?!

I think you're right. I'll keep doing water changes each day until Nitrates are 'normal'. Should I then re-add a bottle of Safe Start? I'm basically starting over, right?

Nitrates through the roof! Cycle done already?!

Hey everyone, So after diving into the world of fish keeping without knowing a thing about it last year and ultimately waking up one morning to 6 dead guppies and 3 dead ghost shrimp, I am now trying again. On Sunday I set up a 26 gallon tank with half of the water coming from a friends...

    Guppies inactive

Thanks for your reply, I definately need a test kit. However for these guys it was too late, Ive woke up to a guppy massacre! 4 dead, one barely alive, with a 'white edge' to it. I changed the top of the water last night, as I wait to buy a gravel vacuum. Changed no more than 10% and...

    Guppies inactive

Hi guys, new to the forum so go easy on me. Two weeks ago we purchased a 5 gallon tank, heather, tetra power filter and some plastic plants. 5 guppies and 3 ghost shrimp for the bottom (Ive since come to realise this may be overcrowding). I also had no clue what cycling the tank meant...
