Glass or no glass...that is the question

Unfortunately, I don't have a sump at this time, but looking into getting one custom built. My stand has odd measurements which makes finding a sump very difficult (22" width, 16" depth, 26" high). Is there any way that I can stop the fish from jumping without adding a lid of any kind? The...

Glass or no glass...that is the question

That's a good idea and will look into that... I'm also having a major issue with evaporation since removing the canopy. Previously, I'd have to top off the tank once a week (I would coordinate this with my weekly water changes) but since removing the canopy I have to top off two to three times...

Glass or no glass...that is the question

I've got a 5 month old FOWLR with one colony of Button Polyps (I Plan on adding more corals eventually). I have a light fixture that is on legs that stands 2 inches above the water and had to replace the Canopys that came with the tank due to the amount of light they would block. Right now...

    Nitrate Spike

I have no idea if the clams are still alive. How do you tell if a clam is still alive? They've buried themselves in the substrate and I haven't seen them since... Removing all the decor is going to be a project and a half. I have 2 logs in there that will not come out unless the entire lid...

    Nitrate Spike

I do PWC's 2 times a week on a 130 Gallon Aquarium once on Sunday and once on Wed or Thurs. Each PWC is 20 gallons each time (four 5 gallon buckets) so that's a total of approx 40 Gallons of water a week in PWC's. Today I did a water test and my Nitrates are up to 80ppm! I don't see how this...

    hornwort growth?

I just picked some up 4 days ago and it's grown about 6 inches since I got it. It must be a weed of some kind, cause at the rate it's growing it'll be out of the tank by tomorrow! I've done a PWC with it already and have had very few leaves break off. Of course, I don't dump the bucket right...

Plant Pruning and all that jazz

Oh ya, they are DEFINATELY the same size. Two plants side by side....I have no idea what's under the substrate though, so I'll have to dig em up to find out. They don't appear to be stunting each other.... I use fertilizers. I use Flourish and Flourish Excel. I'm gonna be getting some more...

    Help with lights/amount of time

A timer works great. I picked one up recently and it comes on at 7:30AM and turns off at 7:30PM. Exactly 12 hours. I don't have to worry about being a little over or under any longer, the only rush is to get the fish fed before the lights go off! They're pretty cheap, you can get a digital...

Plant Pruning and all that jazz

So, I have some Amazon Swords in my tank and I think it's time I need to seperate them. They have both grown into 2 seprate Swords so that would be a total of 4 Swords if I separate the two. However, I'm a little concerned about separating them as when I look at their roots I can see that they...

    bamboo shrimp?

I bought 4 Cherry Fire Shrimp, 4 Ninja Shrimp and 4 Tiger shrimp from AZGardens. The shipping came to be $75 USD (And I'm canadian eh!). It might be because it had to come across the border, but the price in shipping was more than the price for the shrimp. You'd be better off trying to find...

    Shrimp

I just picked up a bottle of Seachem and Sechem Excel for my plants...I did a PWC then followed the directions and added the correct amounts. The problem is, after I did the additives, I noticed on the Seachem that it contains %0.0001 copper. I've heard that Copper or any other metals are toxic...

    Aquarium Size

That would make sense...the tank was not sold with gravel, but it was assumed (at the time) that was what was being put in the tank. I do have approx 2 inches of gravel across the bottom and a few logs...so I'm probably less than 130 Gallons in Volume. Thanks for the input docrak!

Fertilizing: large tank, high light, CO2

I just picked up a bottle of Seachem and Sechem Excel for my plants...I did a PWC then followed the directions and added the correct amounts. The problem is, after I did the additives, I noticed on the Seachem that it contains %0.0001 copper. I've heard that Copper or any other metals are...

    Airstones- function or show?

They're pretty much for show...unless you've duct taped the lid to your tank on... :D The airpump shouldn't require much power, not compared to other things like your filter or the lights.

Shrimp sinking pellets or floating flakes

Pretty much. Read the bottom of this page here where it says "Try some spinach": http://www.azgardens.com/shrimpfactory.php

How many fish at one time?

3 to 5 at a time should be ok and won't stress them out too much. What type of tank are you planning to run? Community, Cichlid, other?

    Water Change???

What are the readings now from your water tests? If the tank is cycled, you shouldn't have any ammonia readings at all. If you've got a Nitrate reading you should do a PWC to get the ammonia level down. It should start to level off in a week or so....

How many fish at one time?

How big is the tank? That usually dictates how much/many you can add at a time.

Shrimp sinking pellets or floating flakes

Ya, I have the same prob in my tank. I've got some Cories that are fed some sinking pellets once a day and algae wafers that are fed once a week to the Ottos, but the Platties and the Tetras eat it all. The Platties usually muscle their way through and take over the meal for the Corys and...

    What is your biggest tank?

I started with a 30 Gallon tank and was quite happy with it....Until I picked up my 130 Gallon. The price for things increases exponentially with the more gallons you have. More fish, more chemicals, more substrate (gravel), more decorations, more filtering, more lighting....on and on and on...

Newbie + Algae vs snail question

TankGirl makes a good suggestion in this thread: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/viewtopic.php?t=12618&highlight=snail There was also a suggestion somewhere in the planted tank section, but I can't find it, where you put a 500Ml plastic soda bottle (or something equivalent) in the tank with...

So where do you get adequate lighting?

On a Side note....I can't seem to find any lights with adequate Wattage outside of the Coralife line...My light can take four 36 inch florescent tubes, but the most I've seen for a 36" light (outside of Coralife) is approx 40 Watts. My light fixture has an option to have all four lights on at...

    Apple Snails

They will eat the decayed leaves? Is that a plus or a minus to them? I ordered 10 of them from AZGardens last night because they looked very interesting and when I'm ready to go full out with a planted aquarium they won't be a problem (Population Controlled by FW aquarium....hopefully 0X )...

    Eheim Filter and Underwater Current

Ya, I think I'll give it a try and see what happens. The only fish that isn't constantly trying to swim head first into the current is the Betta. He looks like a popped balloon when he does. The Balloon Mollies seem to have trouble swimming into the current, but they still do it at least 2 or...

    Aquarium Size

Wow! See, this kind of sucks because all of my lighting calculations were done off the basis that it was a 130 Gallon tank. So now I have to recalculate everything and possibly buy more lighting. It's a glass aquarium, not acrylic, so the thickness is about half an inch on each pain of glass...
