    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Ok just did the morning test and ammonia is 0ppm Nitrite is 0ppm and Nitrate is 80ppm. I'm guessing I can do my water change to bring down the trates and I'm good then? EDIT: Also If I am ready, I can't get fish until the weekend. Should I still add a little ammonia until then so the bacteria...

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Ok so this morning I went ahead and just dosed right to 4ppm. I just got home from work about 8-9 hours later and ammonia is around .25ppm and Nitrites are somewhere between 2 and 5 ppm I can't really match the color (were 0ppm this morning). Not sure what this means lol

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Here is my setup, I am going to switch the back ground to all black.

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Alright will do, I'm assuming waiting 24 hrs between each succession then? I don't really have a timeline for stocking, just whenever it's ready I will begin. I set it up as an African Cichlid tank and was going to start an advice thread on small species and species that stay relatively small...

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

also I just tested Nitrates.... Ammonia = 0ppm Nitrite = 0ppm Nitrate = 80ppm I'm confused on what to do next. That seems to me like the tank is cycled and I just need to do another water change to drop the trates

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

So I posted this roughly 4 hours ago and I'm home from work so I tested water again. Ammonia dropped to .25ppm and Nitrites are still 0ppm. So obviously less than 24 hours later, should I dose back up to 1ppm?

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Ok so I did the huge water change last night. I tested the water after the change and Nitrites were at 0ppm. Just tested the water this morning expecting them to have been high again but they were still at 0ppm. I used the calculator and dosed the tank to 1ppm. So my question is: from here...

    post your cichlid setup here!

I was thinking black, last tank was planted with driftwood hence that choice in back ground, I will more than likely switch it to a black one and then post an updated picture.

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Thanks, I'll probably get those water changes in tomorrow or so, I'll keep this thread posted as I'm sure I'll need some more advice.

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

I was adding about a tablespoon of ammonia to the tank as I read online which clearly is too much. How much ammonia would you suggest adding if the tank is 29g? Once it's back under control.

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Well in that case I'll have to do that when the parents aren't home since unfortunately I haven't been able to leave the nest yet and it is their water bill. Good thing Dad goes to sleep early and Mom works late. And I thought I was so close, shucks.

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Of age to add a little rum with that cigar :p 24 in August. Thanks for the input, that went a lot faster then I was expecting it to go.

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Hmm strange then that it seems to have worked because the ammonia is disappearing like crazy. Would you say that I am close to being done since now the Trites are dropping fast too?

    post your cichlid setup here!

Here is my set-up almost done cycling, nothing in it yet. Definitely needs a different background. Not sure how I feel about it yet :p

    Fishless cycle almost complete?

Hi all, This is my first attempt at fishless cycling and let me tell you I learned what patience is haha. Anyways the tank has been up for about 3 weeks now. I've been adding ammonia up to near 8pm everytime it dropped to around 1ppm. The past week I would add the ammonia in the morning...

    Frustrated ammonia staying at .25

I saw somewhere that Kuhli Loaches are good for digging through sand, anyone know if that is valid?

    Powerhead for 29g?

That's what I was thinking about the canister, I'm thinking that since I've set up the filter I haven't shut it down and gave it a cleaning yet. It seems like the flow has decreased a bit so I might take it apart tomorrow and see if there is a lot of build up or not taking care not to rid it of...

    Driftwood question!

What kind of wood is it do you know? I boiled my Manzanita (that I since donated to my friends tank) for about an hour. When I poured the water out it was clearly stained to creation from the tannins but after having it in my tank for about a month and a half and now in my friends tank for a...

    Powerhead for 29g?

Any ideas on the growths I described and how to rid the tank of them? Like I said I'm doing a fishless cycle, im about 2 weeks into it. Everyday I have to add ammonia back up to around 5ppm because it is consumed almost down to zero in a few hours, Nitrites are still up there. I keep my lights...

    Powerhead for 29g?

I guess I should mention that the stuff on the heater is pretty much a brownish slime, some of the stuff on my one intake is orange in color and the stuff on my other in tank and the glass is very small in size but a brownish color as is the sediment.

    Powerhead for 29g?

Hi, I am curious as to whether or not they make any powerheads small enough for a 29g tank so that it will not blow all my sand around. The output from my canister filter isn't enough. I'm doing a fishless cycle and havent been adding anything to the tank and there is debris collecting on the...

    Fuzzy white fungus on Manzanita

Thanks. I have a bristlenose but it doesn't seem to be eating it. It looks a little better today. Are there any types of algae eating fish that do not get too large? I have a 29 gal.
