Thanks for your reply. :) I've googled dwarf flame gourami and they look a little different. The dwarf flame is all red with a blue dorsal. This one has a red dorsal and no colour on tail fin. Weird.

Chloramine does not "gas off". The water would have to sit for months, maybe even years before the chloramine dissapeared. You must use a dechlorinator for chloramines.

The nitrate test is only designed to measure nitrate up to 160 ppm. If the nitrates are above that, the test will sometimes give a funky reading. With an old, over-stocked and filthy tank, I suspect the nitrates were way off the scale. Just keep doing regular water changes and the nitrates...

I'm confused as to why you say these results are high. I mean, it's not the softest of water but it's not nearly high enough to kill goldfish. My GH is around 200, and my KH is over 80. My goldfish do fine. Goldfish actually love hard water. Maybe we are using different tests. My results are...

If you paint the bottom of your tank (on the outside!), you avoid the mirror effect of bare bottom. I used acrylic paint. Worked awesome!
