Ya i was weary of that when i bought it but the guy at the pet store said it was fine for freshwater. I also washed it then dried it out for 1 week And I have been checking my water parameters daily for 2 days and all the readings tell me the pH is staying the same.

Don't worry once you have an established tank ammonia nitrite and nitrate stay preety solid in the low to none range. Its a lot easier than some of the people on this site make it out to be. Your levels should stabilize after about 2 weeks

You may have staghorn algae which is black like bba but its longer and thicker. It kinda looks like a price of hair. Just a thought. You should upload a picture of the algae so we can determined which type it is

Its true you don't need co2 to have A nice planted aquarium. But if you do want to use co2 but don't want to spend a ton of money liquid carbon is a good solution. I does API co2 booster everyday in my plans are doing great !!!
