    Ebay source for inverts

There was one ebay seller that was scamming snails, though. I think he was selling freshwater snails as nassarius snails. A healthy dose of skepticism is good when looking at any auction, IMO. Check the seller's feedback rating and scan the feedback for any useful information.

    green striped shroom?

You can use a rubber band, fishing line, netting, or a toothpick through it to hold it to the rock for a few days. It should attach with no problems.

    Hermit Crab Molted (pics!)

I know a lot of people worry the first time their hermit crabs molt, which is perfectly understandable. Finding bits of crab scattered about the tank, or a perfectly formed little carapice can be rather disturbing. Add to this the fact that the crab needs to hide for a few days to let the new...

When will this hobby slow down?

This sounds familiar. I bought fish, inverts, LR, and substrate from someone that was moving for $80. It was such a great deal that I couldn't resist, despite the fact that I had decided a few months earlier that it was too expensive... So I had to buy a tank and stand. And then lights...

Gifted vs not gifted what a load of crap!

Have you thought about homeschooling at all? With homeschooling, you can cater to your child's specific gifts and he can learn at his accelerated pace. He probably won't be able to do the after school programs you mentioned, but you could take him to the science museums and libraries during...

Need Emergency Tank -- Nashville, TN

Does anyone have a 55 gallon tank in the Nashville, TN area that I can beg, steal, or borrow? I just fled Louisianna with my marine fish and what inverts I could find from my tank. Since this is definitely an unexpected expense, cheap is essential. Thanks, Joleen Cannon

Beginner with many questions and pictures

1 -- You can use water or water with a little bit of bleach. Just make sure that you rinse it out really well before using it in the tank. If you smell any bleach at all, then it still needs to be rinsed. If there's hard water deposits, you can use vinegar and elbow grease to get rid of them...

    Powerhead not running!

Zacdl, your problem sounds like you have the air intake turned up too high. I assume that's the intake with foam? It is "spitting" water, but there's just so many bubbles you can't see anything but them. I assume the bubbles are going out into the tank and not floating straight up? The force...

Beginner with many questions and pictures

The powerheads go directly into the tank. You probably want to point the flow from them at the return flow from the sump, each other, walls, etc. This breaks up the flow of the water, which is better for the fish. They're just there to circulate water. Is there a pump already in the sump...

Beginner with many questions and pictures

I'm a newby myself, but I can answer a few of these. 4 is a water pump of some variety. I'm not sure which. (Maybe used to pump back from the sump or for enternal water flow.) 5 and 7 are powerheads (water pumps). You place these in the tank to circulate the water. 6 is an air pump. I'm...

    fish tanks in movies AAAARGH!!!

Actually, they designed mazes for each set of fish to go through, using tank dividers and their own theories. Jamie used bright orange plastic and made them associate that with food to encourage them to swim through the holes. At the end of the test (45 days, I think) his fish would go through...

    fish tanks in movies AAAARGH!!!

I don't usually pay that much attention to fishtanks in shows, but last night an old episode of Mythbusters got to me. They were testing the theory that goldfish have a three second memory and went to a LFS to get all their supplies. They showed one of them carrying out a tank, followed by the...

Plumbing a mag drive -- Nevermind

First of all, I apologize for what I'm sure is an absolute newby question. I seem to recall reading that you should double the diameter of the outflow pipe on the mag drives. Now, I can't find that reference. So, before I go out and make a stupid mistake, can someone confirm this? Thanks...

First DYI project EVER, don't have any equipment. Mistake?

Unless my math is wrong, you'll need at least 16 cuts just for the stand. Using GARF's calculator (for exact dimensions) you need: 4 - 2x4x48 -- 2 cuts 6 - 2x4x10 -- 6 cuts 6 - 2x4x(height) -- 6 cuts 3/4" plywood for top -- 2 cuts This doesn't include sheathing it in 1/4" to make it look...

First DYI project EVER, don't have any equipment. Mistake?

My husband and I just built a garf 55 gallon stand. All the material for just the stand came out to about $100. We also spent another $50 for a circular saw. We already had a drill, some clamps, and a level. You can get away with building it with just those tools, but truthfully, if I had...
