I started my 3D background tonight...

I know my intakes and and outputs are in plain sight and I did a lot of thinking before deciding to do them that way. Ultimately for me it came down to convenience and what I thought was common sense. I didn't want the intakes restricted in any way. I didn't want the outputs restricted in...

I let the silicon cure for 72 hours and put water in. Let that sit overnight. The water seemed very filmy on top so I did a full water change the next morning and installed fish and decor. Going great so far and the fish are very happy.

6 tubes of silicon really doesn't look like much once you get it on there and see it from the back... I wish I'd have used 10

    Drylok/silicon curing time

Yeah, I'm fully cycled and my filters are all established. So I'm basically looking for the silicon to cure in 48-72 hours (depending on how thick of a bead I use) BUT I don't need to worry about a crazy amt of water changes on account of the Drylok?

    Drylok/silicon curing time

What's the ABSOLUTE minimum time for: A) letting the silicon cure before adding water B) adding fish to tank after adding water? I don't have a holding tank for my fish, so they'll be hanging out in an igloo cooler in the garage while all this goes down. What are y'all's thoughts? I...

This is what my intention is :) I'm with you on not being impressed with how well the silicon does with holding the styro together by itself, however I think the Drylok will help keep things together pretty well. I actually put one thin coat of Drylok on the back side of the BG to cover the...

how long will my bacterial colony live?

I have disconnected a Fluval 104 from my aquarium and am planning on using it when I set up another tank after Christmas. I did not drain the water from the canister, I just turned it off and left it full of media and water. My question is how long the bacterial colony will live without...

Kimmysparks, If you'll look back at post #8, you can see where my background is split into 2 pieces. It is still in 2 pieces, I just stacked them for the texture painting and for the pictures I took. It still comes apart into 2 pieces to make it be able to install past my center brace. If...

? about pH changes due to cement on my 3d background

That's what I plan on doing with the BG I just made. I have a huge Tupperware container for clothing and il going to soak mine in that for a few days. I'm using drylok instead if straight cement (check out my thread) so mine shouldn't leach too much, but i figure it's better to be safe. Good...

I put another 8/10 of a full coat of charcoal over the muddy color. I then began using a destroyed brush to dry brush coats of Drylok on there that changed shades and got lighter each time. I'd say i probably put 7 layers of dry brush on there to get the texture I was looking for. Some random...

So far I've gotten my 3rd coat of Drylok on. I had it tinted light grey at Home Depot. Did 1 coat of that, then did second with charcoal color added. I muddied this coat up with some buff and red to make a brown. Probably do one more big coat before start detailing is with a destroyed dry brush.

M confused if people are using Dryloc to seal their concrete on the background or using tinted Dryloc INSTEAD of concrete/mortar. Please advise.

Status update: I'm getting close to being finished. I took a little detour on the original plan... I got the bright idea of adding a literal " rift" in the rock design after talking to a friend about my cichlids natural habitat rift lakes...I remember seeing these sort of upheavals on the shale...

    finished 70g with diy background

Looks great man. I'm about halfway done with mine. Just starting to consider how I'm going to anchor it. Did you just silicon it to the back like everyone else? Did you have any lessons learned the hard way you want to share?

3d background, need help from anyone thats build one of these.

So did you just use silicon to attach it to the back? How long did you let the silicon cure before adding water?

Well, I've been thinking about it for a couple of weeks now, and I decided I might as well just go for it. My designs going in a 48x24x18 tank. It will measure 43x22x11 with cutouts for the heater and 2 filters. I'm using 1" board and GE1 silicon. I'm going for a sharper shale-type layered...

    Help Identifying Cichlids

I acquired a tank with the current stock from a gentleman getting out of the hobby. I've been able to find "look-a-likes" of all my fish, but I'm not experienced enough to be able to put a sci. name with my fellas. And while I know I can get along with "Bumblebee Cichlid" for the most part, I'd...

What plants do you like for your Mbunas?

I know, I know... I'm fighting an uphill battle. But the gardener inside me just won't let me go with plastic until I've at least tried to go the live route. I'll start looking for some Anubias
