    Gone Native

I started my pond back in 2006. I wanted something natural-looking, not traffic cones with fins, so instead of goldfish or koi, I intially went with central and south american cichlids. I had a surprising amount of success for a while - with submersible heaters and bubble wrap, I was able to...

    Quarantining freshwater crustaceans?

When I quarantie fish before putting them into my main tank, I treat them prophylacticly with QuICKCure. I'd like to use a similar prophylactic treatment on crustaceans like river shrimp, crayfish, etc, but am not sure what treatments are safe on them. Any suggestions?

    Freshwater Liverock

We all understand the impracticality of keeping live plants in our African Cichlid tanks, and accept that keeping our nitrogenous waste levels down in solely dependent on filtration, microbiological activity, and water changes. Or is it? I have Texas holey rock limestone throughout my setup...

    S. American Cichlids survived freeze

Well, a few weeks ago Houston got one of its rare freezes, probably the only one we will have this winter. Since my pond is only about 6 months old, I was worried about how the fish would fare. I have a 100 gallon pond with 1 green terror, 2 green severums, 2 jack dempseys, and 8 buenos aires...

    Slick on top of pond

I removed a bunch of leaves from the bottom of my pond, stirred up a bunch of detritus, did a PWC a couple of days ago, and then the next morning I saw a light slick over the top of my whole pond. The fish and plants all appear fine. All parameters normal. Anyone have any ideas what it might be?

    Bringing home brackish

I have found when I have kept brackish fish that many LFSs, and especially the chains (petco, petsmart) will be keeping young brackish species in pure freshwater. When I am putting the first brackish fish into a newly setup brackish tank, I plan ahead, set the tank up with just freshwater, then...

Amazon sword plant reproduction in pond

I had kept amazon swords before in aquariums, but had never seen one reproduce before. I'm getting new ramets shooting off the mother plant via stolons, with their own little root systems now. The mother plant is also blooming. It produced a long central stem, bare except for little groupings...

    Standard tank sizes

Obviously I am aware of the fact that there are a plethora of different aquarium sizes and shapes, too, but even so, there are a few "classic" rectangular glass tank sizes that are very common no matter who makes them, like the 20 long, the 29 high, and the 55. I wonder why these sizes are so...

New to Ponds - Heater Question

I live in subtropical Houston, so winter temps are pretty high. Average highs in January are in the 60s, average lows are in mid-high 40s. I have a 100 gallon pond, in a sheltered location close to the house. It has South American cichlids in it. I have several questions about heaters. 1. What...

    Gulf coast toad tadpoles

Toads picked my pond for a nursery and laid huge amounts of eggs. Fortunately the tadpoles have thinned out to a manageable number. I'm wondering, how long does it take the tadpoles to become toads? They hatched about a week and a half ago.

    Moving a tank without cycling

I have a 55 gallon tank with 6 large Africans that I recently moved without cycling the tank before putting the fish in. On the same day, I took the fish out, broke the tank down, moved it, set it back up, and put the fish in. Though I would have liked to have done things differently (holding...

    Freshwater tarpon?

I stopped in a tiny hole-in-the-wall fish store I had never seen before, just out of curiosity to see if they had anything rare or exotic. In a freshwater tank, they had a bunch of silvery fish, about 1' to 18 inches long. They sold for about $24, as I recall. The label on the tank said...

    Tropheus moorii frustration

I tried Tropheus moorii about a year ago and could just not seem to keep them alive. They are so cool looking that I would love to try them again, but I won't if I can't give them the conditions they require. I have a 55 gallon tank with only 7 africans in it. When I bought a moorii I stopped...

    Polypterus AKA bichir help

I bought a polypterus from my LFS that I trust pretty well and got scant advice from the clerk other than they should do fine with African cichlids and aren't picky and will eat anything that fits in their mouths. It's little, and I put it in my 55gal rift valley cichlid tank. It got its caudal...

Anyone keep other pond fish besides koi and goldfish?

Who here keeps other fish besides the usual pondfish (koi, goldfish, etc). Does anyone keep tropicals? How about North American native fishes?

    Cichlids in Pond

I was wondering if anyone has had experience keeping Central and/or South American Cichlids in an outdoor garden pond? I'm planning to set up a pond and have no interest in keeping koi whatsoever. I have kept cichlids in tanks for years (mostly Malawians and Tanganyikans, but some neotropical...
