I have not done any water changes during the cycle. I did top the tank off once the water level dropped about 1 inch. I treated the water with prime prior to adding it to the tank.

You're going to need a consistent ammonia source through the cycle. Fish food works but it makes the process a lot slower and you will start to collect food on the floor of the tank. I would recommend the Janatorial strength ammonia from ACE Hardware. I think you can order it from their website...

It's not unusual to see algae during a cycle. Algae loves the water conditions that are created for a cycle. You just want to make sure you leave the tank light off during the cycle. The light will promote the algae growth.

Thanks for the tip gdcmv! I just tested the treated tap water and nitrates were 0 so my tank really did create those nitrates. I tested the tank today(day 11) with Ammonia at .25ppm, Nitrites at 5ppm AGAIN, and Nitrates at 5ppm again. That seems weird to me since Ammonia is virtually gone...
