    Dream World (testing times)

Unfortunately, testing more than Ph, Salinity, Temp, and Conductivity is very expensive to do with an electronic system. There are colorimeters to test some additional parameters (like PO4), but each is custom, expensive, and requires you to put water into a testing vial, making it less than...

    emerald crab reviews?

I have one Emerald that's about 1-in in diameter, and has been for 6 months. So far, it's quite peaceful and a pleasure to have in the tank.

    Re-introducing sand

I've sucked out a lot of sand in the process of cleaning my tank. What should I do with it before adding it back to the tank, if I want to put it back in?

    Sand blowing around!

I have a pretty shallow sand bed. It's about 1.5" deep on average. Most of my PHs are pointed upwards and toward the center, which gives good surface agitation and no dominant current direction. If I point them more toward the walls, I always get blowing away of the sand on that wall.

    Sand blowing around!

Whenever my powerheads get moved the slightest bit, the sand in my tank starts shifting around a lot. I get hills and valleys dipping all the way to the glass in some places. How do I prevent this? Any tips? Right now I have 4 PHs each about 280 gph in my 58 gal tank. I want to maintain...

    What are your favorite softies?

I really like my cabbage leather (I think that's what it is). Here is a small pic.

Halide lighting, with or without glass

The glass on most single-ended MH bulbs is UV shielded, so you do not need a shield for those types. I do have a piece of acrylic between my bulb and tank to prevent splashing and lower the heat transfer a bit. I bought a kit with a reflector, mount, ballast, and bulb, then built an acrylic...

    Reef Supplements

I dose Kalkwasser pretty regularly, in addition to frequent PWCs. I find this helps the growth of coralline vs less attractive algae and cyano. Do others use Kalk?

    Remote Aquarium Monitoring

Hi all, Going away for a few days made me think that some form of remote monitoring and limited control could be set up for my aquarium. The first key element would be a webcam showing the tank. That part is easy, but would give some peace of mind to the traveler that the tank is running...

    Timers

I'm currently using two Coralife Digial Dual Power Center for my power and timers. It combines a power strip and programmable sockets, which is a nice design, but it's cheap, and you get what you pay for. I've also read about fire hazards with these. How do you handle timers and electrical...

    Suction cups

Yesterday, I cleaned up all the powerheads in my tank (4 JBJ SP-1800s). After replacing them, I found that many of the suction cups are losing grip, and one powerhead even fell after a few hours, causing some havoc on my sand bed. What do you do to secure powerheads to avoid such catastrophes...

    Spots on clownfish

Hi all, I have had a new B&W Ocellaris in my quarantine tank for a bit over two weeks now. It had Ich, which I treated with formalin for a week. It looks like the Ich has gone (the fish was covered in it), but there are still lingering white spots on its dark bands. There are also tiny red dots...

    RO/DI slow flow

It's producing a ratio of DI:waste of 1:24. Would low temp cause that? I understand the ratio should be around 1:4. My tap water is pretty cold, but I'm in Los Angeles not Wisconsin! It ain't freezing. The pressure coming out of the waste is pretty strong when the flush valve is open, though I...

    RO/DI slow flow

I'm sure this has come up, but I can't find it. I hooked up a RO/DI unit today, and everything appears to be set right, but my flow rate of RO/DI water is extremely slow. It's a 100GPD unit and so far it's producing 1 quart per hour as opposed to the 4 gal/hour it should. I've flushed the RO...

    Low Alkalinity

I'm using Tropic Marin Reef-Pro, and I have found my alkalinity to be on the low side -- around 7 dKH. What do you recommend for raising the alkalinity?

    Whitening Coralline

My lovely purple coralline algae is starting to develop white spots. You can see the attached picture. Any ideas why this would be happening?

    Stocking Advice

My lighting is one 400W 20k MH, which I run for 6 hours per day. I also have 2 24w 50/50s that I run for two hours before and after the MH.

Some more questions. More challenging this time

Salt: I use Tropic Marin Reef Pro and I'm quite happy with it. Powerheads: Probably best to let them run all the time. The currents in the ocean never stop, and the fishes sleep just fine there. Snails: I have a number of Astrea snails and they never bother corals. My large turbo does...

    Stocking Advice

I'm wondering what my livestock limits should be for my tank. I would like a combination of fish, mobile inverts, corals, and a clam. My tank is 58gal with about 60lb LR, a bed of LS, and a BakPak skimmer. My lighting is very intense and there is plenty of circulation. Current stock: 1 small...

    Zoanthid? Coral?

For what it's worth, someone from WetWebMedia said: "I'm not quite sure; you either have a specie of Hydnophora or a fragment of Pavona decussata." Pavona looks promising. http://species.fishindex.com/photo_2499pavona_decussata_cactus_coral.html http://melevsreef.com/id/pavona.jpg
