    Question about PC lighting

The ballasts are JBJ electronic 55wx2. What I was thinking was I could run 2x28 on one ballast or 4x28 on both over my 12g nano or my 30g sump. This is a leftover ballast from when I retrofitted 2x250w MH in my JBJ 4x55w CF hood last year. What's the worst that could happen? 8O

    Question about PC lighting

Possibly stupid electrical question... I have a couple extra 65W PC ballasts laying around. Can I run 2x28w PC's with one of these ballasts? Thanks!

    Biggest home aquarium?

Did you see the pic of Kevin in the tank holding the leather coral? He told me earlier today that it weighs about 150 lbs! He's got LR that's bigger than most of our tanks... He is opening his home to SEASL (SALTWATER ENTHUSIASTS ASSOCIATION OF ST. LOUIS) later in March. If you are within...

    Biggest home aquarium?

One of my colleagues here in St. Louis has the largest in-home tank I've ever seen. It's a 5,000 gallon reef that was recently set up in his new house, or should I say his house was set up around the reef:-) His old tank was a 2,000 gallon I believe. Here's the link to "Zilla III"...

Finally, pics of my reef tank!

Thank you very much for your kind comments :D On the photography bit though... it's really the camera :? I picked up the Canon Digital Rebel last year to take pics of my daughters soccer excursions. It really does a fantastic job. I need to get a tripod for the tank shots though. It's...

Finally, pics of my reef tank!

fishfreek, You're not the first to point that out. All I can say is that there are a couple really big pieces in there. Plus, when you buy cured LR, how do you account for water weight???

Finally, pics of my reef tank!

I've been working hard on this setup since I did an upgrade/relocation. It's been up and running for around 6 months now. The previous setup was up and running for well over a year. Made a lot of mistakes in the beginning because I listened to the LFS folks. Anyway, here's my new setup: 90g...

Here's my latest setup. It's a 90g acrylic with 2x250W MH 2x65W PC actinics. I'm constantly trying to find balance with my aquascaping... Whole Tank (not dialup friendly): http://homepage.mac.com/houseofwindsor/reef/reef-Pages/Image26.html

I Have very cloudy water....can anybody help?

It sounds like the snails are spawning. This happens in my tank at least once every six or so weeks. See if you can't see a few of them huddled up in a group, probably near the top of the tank. That's where it seems to happen most. One or more of them will be letting out a small white stream...

It's Playsand season. Shout out when you find some!

If anyone in the St. Louis area is interested in getting some Old Castle Tropical sand, the Fairview Heights, IL HD has 12 bags left. I had some transfered in from another store and they sent too much. It isn't out on the floor yet, but I suspect it will be soon. Good Luck!

    Help me cool my top...

I need to come up with some way of cooling my recently converted hood. For vision related reasons, I am forced to leave my 2x250W MH's about 4" off the water. This is ok except that I will soon be running into a heat problem as I run the lights more every day to acclimate. Below are a few...

Where are all these bubbles coming from??? Please help!

I have a theory... The two M58 ballasts are running right below the tank. What if the heat from this warmed the DBS enough, forcing the nitrogen bubbles to rise prematurely 0X I planned on getting a fan for the ballast and the tank tonight, but all I could find were heater fans :? Go...

Where are all these bubbles coming from??? Please help!

I've got tons of microbubbles rising off the sandbed and on the rocks. The only thing I can think of is the fact that I just upgreded to 2x250W MH lighting from 2x65W PC. I've been running them for about 1 1/2 hours in the morning and another 1 1/2 hours in the evening, increasing each cycle...

    Question about MH bulbs

I'll let them run in for a few weeks. I haven't run carbon for some time, but my water is very clear to the naked eye. And the glass is always clean. Even the back 8) So, is there anything wrong with keeping the lights 4" above the water rather than the typical 8-9"? I assume this is for...

    Question about MH bulbs

I just finished upgrading my 2x65w 10k PC to 2x250w 10K MH lighting tonight. I am very disappointed in the color of these MH lights. I was sure that they would be white(r) than my PC lights. Instead, my PC's looked allot better. The MH with the actinics looks like my 10K PC without, just to...

    MH retrofit questions

Wow! 600 degrees? Just to put it in perspective, approximately how hot do PC lights burn? Am I going to require a chiller? :?

    MH retrofit questions

I purchased a dual 250w 20k MH retrofit kit earlier this week for my 55 gallon reef. I plan to install them this weekend, but I had a couple of questions. The new lights are going to be replacing my two 65w 10k PC lights in my 48" JBJ Formosa hood. I will leave the other two 65w Actinics in...

    Southdown alternatives?

Yes. I contacted them twice now and they won't return my emails. They have a pretty good deal it seams with a buy 4 get one free. Absolutely! I also attempted to contact Yardright and they too do not answer my inquiries. Right now, I have ~2" of the medium grade Aragonite sand from Carib...

    Southdown alternatives?

I have been looking for Southdown in the St. Louis area for some time now. The HD stores don't carry it and claim that they can't (or won't) order it. My question is, are there any alternative sands that somewhat compare in grain size and color that would work as well for a DSB other than...

    Lifetime supply of Kalkwasser...CHEAP!

Yeah, it's a bit much for my 55 too 8O But the way I see it, even if I only refill my 3.5oz bottle of $9.95 Kent stuff, I'm doing alright. I'll use the rest to mark off a soccer field in the yard for my daughter :D The humidity is pretty bad here too because of the rivers. Could I maybe...

    Lifetime supply of Kalkwasser...CHEAP!

Actually, it is chemical grade. My sudo mentor uses it in his 5,000 gallon reef, and has been for some time with no ill effects.

Adding a DSB to an established reef?

Wow! Thanks for the great suggestions! I must admit that I already removed a good portion (10-20%) last week as I am fighting cyano like the dickens. I've lost alot through manual removal of large patches. So, is it not recommended to mix some live sand with the southdown in this...
