What Made You Want A Freshwater Aquarium?

When I was about 6 my father had a fishtank. My older brother, 7 1/2, decided he liked milk so much that fish would probably like it too. That was the last time my dad ever had fish. Shame too, but it was his loss.

Holey rock at $.15 a pound?????

Thats a good idea. I live at the crossroads of I35 and I70. Perhaps I can do this. Thanks! Wife says they have a bulletin board at one of the local truck stops. I figure that a small load of this rock has to have SOME good looking rocks, and the rest gets put below it to make a strong base...

Holey rock at $.15 a pound?????

yes, I thought about that. But its the right kind of rock for a tank, and the rock was to be used for the bottom base. I just thought that I could get nicer pcs for the top layers. I also wrote back and told them I was looking for smaller chunks, not pcs that are 50# each.

Holey rock at $.15 a pound?????

A San Antonio Tx. company named Keller Material just quoted me .15 lb for Texas Holey rock. Problem is they want to put the 50 lbs I want on a skid to ship it. Skid shipping will cost me over $700. Is there anyone out there fro San Antonio? Would like to now more about them, and maybe work...

    Plastic plants???

From using them. Have had bad experiences. But it's a choice and I will admit it was a long time ago. Probably new products out there now. The point is that some people don't want to mess with that stuff, and for them.... plastic is easier. With the ones I get at Hobby Lobby I have had MANY...

    Plastic plants???

    1) I have never had problems over the rust- not enough of it to cause problem (10 years running) 2) FERTILIZERS ARE BAD!!!!!! 3) You don't have that a fertile substrate in a new setup. Look, not everyone wants to put that much work into a tank. (fishtank vs. ecosystem) I just put out what MY...

    55 gal stand

Looks solid to me. I did something very similar frame wise. Wrapped it with 3/4" oak ply, put on corner edging. Banded the top edging and put an opening in the front. The dog toys go into the body with the fish on top. Both the dog and the wife love it. you could do the same and still brace...

Live rock critters. the good, the bad and the ugly.

How about some pix and descriptions of some of those night time critters? Which ones are good and which ones do I need to rid my tank of?

    Tiny Tank filter (DIY)

The plan is solid. Will work with top or bottom holes as long as the air escape holes remain in lid. Could be modified for different canisters. Could be used for long distance transfer bucket with battery op air pump.

    Sand and gravel?

Use a funnel and hose to gently put the sand to the bottom of tank. Water will cloud slightly but should settle quick. I never had to remove the fish doing it this way.

Are Smaller Tanks Easier to Maintain than Larger tanks?

Fresh or salt....smaller is never easier!

Goldie snaps at water line, begging for food

I am no expert, but goldfish will pretty much eat whatever you feed them. Too much protein leads to fat fish. They require more veg matter. But the popping I have seen before. I personally think it's just a form of begging, and perhaps boredom. Goldfish do not have long memories, and it is...

    Green spotted puffer???

The best part about a sick tank is that you dont want a bunch of stuff for it. I believe I saw a few posts on them. It's a necessity really.

    Sandstone for live rock?

And yet he is correct. As I stated there are many types of sandstone. I found a list of about 40. Not exactly sure what kind mine is but a chem test preformed by a friend showed that the lime in this batch is very low. And though it is very hard it had a lot of holes and pits. Will try to get...

Ever wanna slap your lfs people in the back of the head?

Poor choice- happy ending. When I decided to start my first brackish tank I talked to local if manager and told him I had cycled and was ready to stock. I wanted something peaceful, that would go good with others to be added later. Thats when he talked me into the two fig 8 puffers I now own...

Fish In Cycling - strange parameters

My bad!!!!! I was only referring to the floss medium, and only to the extent that it slows the flow of water. I should have spent more time with my answer. I highly recommend a larger tank also.

    Sick or a Mad Crab?

I don't know what type of crab, but I would research compatibility quickly, because the crab WILL win!

    Sandstone for live rock?

Wow. I am finding such a diversity of information out there in cyberspace. I've seen so many differing opinions by so many so called experts that it boggles the mind. First of all, there are sooooo many different kinds of sandstone, some occurring naturally on the ocean floor. Then there is a...

    Green spotted puffer???

But I forgot to add that they are real bullies. Read a lot before putting them in with anything else, and provide lots of hiding spots. They do get mean with other fish. Mated pair species tank is best.

    Green spotted puffer???

This can be done in a 10g tank. You should be able to get one cheaply, filter and all, as a kit which you then set up fresh and slowly, a little each day, watching ALL of your parameters until it matches your tank. Then again over the course of a day acclimate to the larger tank. This will...
