    Filtration question

Correct, should never have to do anything to your AQ biomax. The sponge will get brown, and you really don't need to do anything to that unless you know you notice you have lost flow. Kevin

    White Lesion on Convict

I have a 9 month old Convict that has developed a white "nodule" on his side just in back of gill. I have never made any fish purchases since him and 3 brothers. No new filters, media change etc. 37 gal tall, AQ70 HOB, carbon used, and changed 1/month. Biomax, and sponge stay put. My pH is 7...

    Resealing question

Been keeping fish for 16 years or so, and never had to reseal my tank. Sorry for my ignorance, but what do you mean by this last comment? What is an inner seal vs any other "seal". I ask as I have been searching craigslist for larger tanks, looking to find a similar deal to the OP, and...

Is it bad to clean all sides of glass?

Scrubbed all the glass 1/month for 17 years without any issue. Kevin

    Nitrate spike vs food

I don't think you understand what I mean by rate nitrate change, nor understand a steady state process. I never said I am trying to keep it between 5-10. I said that to keep my tank at any steady state I would need to change 2x the water per week than what I was changing before the diet...

    Nitrate spike vs food

I didn't say it was 20. I said it rose 20-30ppm in one week which is up from 3-5 ppm per week "gain" Before in my 37, I could do a 15 gallon change 1/week, and it would keep it between 5-10 which is great. With this new "nitrate gain rate" I would have to change 30 gallons per week...

    Nitrate spike vs food

Question, noticed a change in my tank in the last week. Error in title. I mean NITRATEs. I have fed my 4 < 1yr convicts (3-4") small Omega convict pellets and flakes for many months, and they have very routinely put out about 5ppm of Nitrates per week so a 15 gallon water change keeps it...

    post your cichlid setup here!

Sorry, been pretty busy with work. Thanks for the comments. As to the tank, tank, I'm sure. It might be distortion of the image as it was a wide angle lens. It's a Top Fin 37. 30x12 by 22" high. Just did a 17 gallon water change today that brought it down to about 1/2 level. Still...

    post your cichlid setup here!

Not sure what you mean that "3rd pic is flowing" But anyway, the darker convict is the dominant fish. Using a Nikon camera.

    post your cichlid setup here!

Here is my humble set up, tall 37. Has four young male convicts in it, but looking to upgrade to a 75 to see if I can tame the chasing. It's not constant sometimes they all hang together but the dark convict is the dominant male and sometimes will spend hours chasing the others, event he...

HELP- New tank setup- killed all fish in 3 hours

Keep in mind the bleach is much more aggressive at lower pH, and also in the RO water which is corrosive to begin with. Best of luck with the next try, just change the water frequently during the cycle process and test often.

    Outdoor pond

As previously mentioned, goldfish and koi survive up here in NY with a simple small heater to keep water from freezing, but water is still cold. Air temps here can reach -20 to -30 F. I would think the biggest challenge in NM would be keeping water in the pond.

So... Need help with this one....

Really neat fish. Heterotilapia Buttikoferi family cichlidae. Just curious why this is not considered a cichlid?

    New filter

I would run all three at least until you cycle the 306. Your previous filter capacity was actually higher, and I would probably keep the AQ70 running. Great filter, and it and the 306 should give you the 10x hourly turnover that is best practice. Good luck.

    pH going crazy

The rock will raise the alkalinity significantly along with the pH. My guess is that the rock still shed lots of small debris that is still continuing to disassociate and raise the pH alkalinity with time. If you can't find it, and vacuum it out, you may need to do a substrate change. If...

    Need a bigger tank?

Can anyone ID the larger one. In the ad, they called it a Pacohoo or something like that. I assumed it might be a Pacu? I assume a 180-300 gallon tank might be in order for this one? Kevin

    Adult Convict Coloring

Just to clarify, these are all males. I believe it's a lighting phenomena in photo's that enhance very subtle blue shading.

    Adult Convict Coloring

Have a question on coloring for adult convicts. I have seen a number of pics on the internet where they look quite black/blue stripes. Even the few pics I have taken of mine tend to have a slight blue to them, but these visually do not look blue. Will they take on more color as they age or...

    Convicts Like heater

All male convicts, and it's not a territorial as they all hang out there together or at least 3 out of 4. As far as being cockroaches that might be a stretch. They are certainly somewhat sensitive to nitrates. They were also sensitive to some cooler temps I have mistakenly kept the tank...

    Convicts Like heater

I find my convicts hanging out round the heater. Tank is 78 degrees. All parameters are good, and they are fed well. Should I raise temp a bit more or will they always like the warmer area? Kevin

    filter media

The AQ70 is what I have. Fantastic filter. I use the supplied sponge as described earlier, the biomax rocks, and the carbon packs. I have been considering for quite some time to use an additional sponge split in half or more biomax instead of the carbon. Kevin
