    Neon tetra questions

It's mostly just chasing. The ones being bullied may just hide in a corner or whatever hiding spot instead of swimming freely. I haven't seen any ripped fins or anything though. The most I'd be concerned about is feeding. I've had one case where one was bullied to the point where it didnt...

    Substrate for Planted Tank?

Imo it's alright to jump right into a planted tank. Research research and more research! I feel like I've learned more biology through a planted tank than I had in school. Knowledge is key - I suggest going to different places for ideas on how you want to do your planted tank as everyone has...

    Neon tetra questions

I agree with Barliman. Add 3 first then the rest in a week or so if nothing looks amiss and your water params look good. You may see some bullying because the school is small, but that is normal and it'll be much better when you fill the school of 5.

    Advice?

You could get some small tetras! They will fill the rest of the tank as cories will be on the bottom looking for food mostly. Especially since cory variations /generally/ are more dull in colour, one of the more colourful variations of tetras would look great.

    Corydoras

I think they will be ok. I find them to be more 'explorers' than 'sprinters' if that makes any sense.

    Neon tetra questions

I honestly wouldn't keep more than 5 in a 5.5gallon. Fully planted with hiding spots aside, neons are fast swimmers and like space to 'play' in the water flow (I often catch mine doing this with my filter outflow). Imo, a betta is a bit much. Even if it's not aggressive, the neons will most...

    Starting a pond...

Hi! Sorry I meant to reply to this once I get more insight and news on what my family wants once things settle. We have found a keeper for our koi so they have been rehomed. Right now we have plans to do a half in-ground pond. What is supposed to be a simple project now seems somewhat of a...

    Oto Catfish

Otos are amazing! The minimum I would have is 3, they do swim together and seem to like hanging out together but as long as they have good hiding spots to hide away from prying eyes they should feel fine. That said, I do have 5 in my 30 gallon. I don't actually feed them too often as they...

    Fish dying!!!! Tank Won't cycle!!!

I agree with checking for Nitrates. If your readings are 0, yes that means its not cycled but I also don't think that would be cause for your fish getting sick :T How often are you doing your water changes? How much water do you change each time? Cycling is a pain in the butt for sure and I...

What is this white stuff in my aquarium?

Yep, this is fungus and fish/shrimp LOVE to feast on it. Once you get some livestock in there, it'll disappear really quickly so don't worry about it. Just recently reintroduced my fish to my tank after a move and the two massive pieces of fungus covered wood was cleaned completely the next day...

SAE looks like it is turning into a dragon?

Definitly dropsy. Dropsy isn't a disease on its own but more of a symptom caused by infection. It's hard to recover from dropsy, but there are some articles online that detail possible treatments to help with survival rate. It's most likely a water problem (and seems your LFS agrees). I would...

    Is my stocking plan ok?

Awesome thanks. Yeah i was planning on moving everyone over since the tank is cycled and waiting maybe a month or so before adding the rams and the cories. Using ADA Amazonia for this new set up and knowing that it leaks ammonia makes me nervous so I'm being extra careful

    Is my stocking plan ok?

Oh boy it's time... I just moved into a new house with a new tank (33gallon)!! It's cycling with one of the two filters I had running on my original 30 gallon, so hopefully I'll be able to transfer my community over sooner than later. It's a slightly bigger tank and I did have a bit of fish...

    Eco Complete + ADA Aquasoil?

Thanks! I'll do that then so at the very least it wont go to waste.

    Eco Complete + ADA Aquasoil?

Hey guys, I'm moving so figured this was a chance to redo my 30 gallon tank and try some new stuff! I have 2 bags of ADA Amazonia 9L and I was going to order in some Power Sand M to lay under the aquasoil....but I have read and been talking to the LFS about it and a lot of people seem to...

    Starting a pond...

Sorry it's been a while! But yeah I'm sad we will have to find new homes for the koi, I grew up with them so it's harder than expected. There is an issue with the regulations for the area our new house is, and unfortunately they prevent us from doing any major alterations to the land (like a...

    Starting a pond...

Thank you everyone for the support and patience! Unfortunately it turns out i won't be able to start this project. Makes me sad to think I can't keep the koi, but we'll be finding a good home for them through the original breeder. Thanks again for all the patience and useful advice - the...

    Starting a pond...

I was fighting with that idea yeah. My main concern is that I haven't seen anything on CLEANING the settling tank. Since it's underground, how do people drain it of the muck?

    Starting a pond...

I see... I think I may get a bottom drain with smaller openings then and use the pump before the filter since the one I have has a high gph and I dont think we have enough room for a gravity fed filter. So I'm going to do a simple 55gal drum diy filter as much as I would absolutely love to do...

    Starting a pond...

Oh an open filter? that's something new, never heard that before! I'm probably going to do a single barrel diy filter after some research, seems like the best way to go regarding cost and maintenance. The pond probably won't be too big, so the current pump we have installed in the old house...

    Starting a pond...

Thank you so much for the input especially regarding filtration. I had some further questions but for now I'll leave it until I do some more of my own research...otherwise just one question: A neighbor has a concrete chamber that acts as a filter. As far as I could understand, he has a...

    Starting a pond...

I am moving soon and I will need to make a pond as the property doesn't have one. I'm not sure how to go about doing it properly and I'm hoping I could get some pointers. Some questions I have off the top of my head: 1) How big should it be? - I live in Vancouver, BC Canada and the water does...

    algae eater choice

I had (and still have) a case of BBA. It was really bad at one point and I bought myself 2 SAEs (be careful to get proper Siamese Algae Eaters and not fakes ones sometimes labeled Flying Foxes) They do a decent job keeping BBA in check, but it won't be a 100% cure for sure. I've read that BBA...

    A good cleaning crew

I'm currently having issue with hair algae as well. Fish don't really go for it unfortunately. Best option for you, in my opinion, is to maybe amp up how often you clean. I do once a week 30% water change but also spot clean a little every day using a turkey baster or a manual gravel cleaner...

    Neon tetra! Help!!

He looks alright to me, not sure if anyone else can see any abnormalities. I wouldn't jump right to NTD right away, from what I've read (and a NTD scare myself) usually you expect to see some deformities in the fish, mainly weird bumps and/or discoloration. Some basic questions that may help...
