    Luck or just peaceful?

I had 2 gouramis (one blue and the other sunset thick-lipped) that were the most peaceful fish in my community of 13 fish. I'm guessing like in humans, each variety of aggressive/semi-aggressive fish have members with differing personalities.

Tail Rot - Furan 2, Triple Sulfa or both?

A big thank you to everyone, as all the advice has been invaluable. Updates from today- 1. I did a 50% water change on the main tank on Saturday night, and there was no change in her behavior Sunday morning. Not eating, just lying near the bottom. I did not want to risk this any further, so I...

Tail Rot - Furan 2, Triple Sulfa or both?

Thanks Angela. Even though I do use Prime with each water change, I did not make the connection that the Prime would keep the water in check for 24 hours. Hopefully, a once daily water change + prime should do the trick. I will use this strategy for a quarantine tank for the SAE instead of for...

Tail Rot - Furan 2, Triple Sulfa or both?

Here is a pic. Image - TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting Unfortunately the bowfront does not allow for good pictures. I actually have a couple of empty tanks (one 20g and one 3g kritter keeper), however, how do I use these either as a QT or for stocking the inverts...

Tail Rot - Furan 2, Triple Sulfa or both?

I have a 36g bowfront stocked as below- 4 x guppy 2 x platy 2 x swordtail 1 x Siamese Algae Eater 1 x mystery snail 4 x ghost shrimp Now the SAE has been looking very stressed/sick (hiding all the time, staying still near bottom of tank etc) past couple days. Water parameters are fine and...

Will used filter instantly cycle new tank?

Any such thing as overfiltering? Thanks addisson, thats a great idea. At some point though I will have 3 filters running on the 36g. Will this cause any kind of issue? I wouldn't have thought so, but you never know. Also, its not going to be a backup filter anymore, as I just got a deal I...

Will used filter instantly cycle new tank?

Hi, I currently have a 36g bowfront and use 2 filters on it - a Marineland Penguin 200B and an Aqueon QuietFlow 20. The tank and both filters are about 4 months old and the tank has been fully cycled for a few months with all fish healthy. I am planning on starting a new 20g long tank, and...

    All good friends

Somehow my mystery snail is a loner. Isn't really into the community thing.

    All good friends

A pic of my Gourami, Guppys and Platys sharing an algae chip. For some reason, the Siamese Algae Eater for whom the chip was thrown in, has no interest in it.

    Friend for two guppies?

I cycled my tank with 4 guppies, and later added 2 platys and a swordtail, 4 ghost shrimp and a mystery snail. I know you won't be able to add all of them in a 10G, but they all live very peacefully with each other, so you should be able to pick any one of those species of tank mates.

Kid wants to pet mystery snail

I know its a bit of a silly question, but I'm loving my 6 year old girl's interest in our aquarium and I want to keep it going. We added a mystery snail to our community yesterday, and as I was taking it out of the bag, she was allowed to gently touch/rub its shell. Now she wants to know if I...

The joys of children... and fish.

Guppies and Tetra SafeStart I cycled with 4 guppies and with the use of Tetra SafeStart, and all fish made it to the end of the cycle and are healthy as ever now. I've read some reviews stating that TSS did not work for them, but it seemed to do the job for me. Follow the instructions if using...

Normal for guppies/platys to chase each other?

I have 4 guppies and 2 platys. For some reason, one of the platys is constantly chasing the other, and the same guy also chases around the smallest of the guppies. Now, the 2 being chased, do not go into hiding or show any other sign of stress, and once the chasing is done, they go back to doing...

    Nitrates in tap water

Hi, I've been trying to cycle my 36g bowfront for about 6 weeks now with no luck. I've 2 filters - Marineland Penguin 200B and Aqueon QuietFlow 20. I started out with 4 guppies, added 2 platys after 3 weeks and one sunset thick lipped gourami last week. I havent lost a fish so far, all fish are...

how to get rid of nerite snail eggs once and for all???!!!

Actually, I dont have Algae. I'm getting a snail because my little girl wants a snail. Having got one, I dont want to make it too demanding to keep, hence the need to be able to identify males for any type of snail.

how to get rid of nerite snail eggs once and for all???!!!

Is it possible to identify the males from the females (in this or any other type of snail). I was thinking if I get 1 or 2 males, I shouldn't have to be concerned about the eggs.

how to get rid of nerite snail eggs once and for all???!!!

Hi, I was considering getting Nerites for my tank (1 or 2) only because I read somewhere that they do not breed in freshwater, but seeing as they are laying eggs, that doesn't seem to be true. Are there any types of snails that will not lay eggs, and would not get picked on by my current stock...

    Ammonia Levels wont go down

Its a 36g tank. I change about 7g every Sunday. I haven't tested tap water at all, thats a great idea. I will do that. Will Nitrate in tap water account for higher ammonia, because for a tank thats cycling for about 7 weeks, the Nitrite at 0, and Nitrates at 10ppm, seem to be acceptable values...

    Ammonia Levels wont go down

I started my first tank 7 weeks ago, and diligently researched and followed all advice. I have 4 guppies, 2 platys and a recently added Gourami. All are doing well. They are extremely active and are eating well, and the water is clear. However, my Ammonia reading still shows 0.2ppm (Nitrite is 0...

Will an all-male aquarium be a problem?

Thanks. Do I need to have some algae in the tank for any reason. I have a UV sterilizer (9w Green Killing Machine) that may be responsible for the lack of algae, but if I'm planning on keeping oto's, do I need to have some algae, or will the sinking algae wafers be sufficient?

Will an all-male aquarium be a problem?

Is biofilm the same as algae? And is it something that's visible to the naked eye? My tank is established as per the water parameters, but the water and glass are both clear, so not really sure if I have algae/biofilm.

Will an all-male aquarium be a problem?

I was considering a group of 3-4 otocinclus' as AqAdvisor tells me they will keep me under 100%, but read this line (admittedly on PetSmart for what its worth) - "Algae eaters should not be kept by beginners or in a community aquarium with delicate fish". Is this true? If so, why? Because they...

Will an all-male aquarium be a problem?

6" is probably a bit big for my tank. The reason I went with the rainbow shark idea is that I dont have enough capacity to add a school of bottom dwellers like corys etc. Any thoughts on single bottom dwellers less than 6" that I could use? Angela - on the low light plants topic, the tank came...

Will an all-male aquarium be a problem?

Well, I guess I'm going a little crazy, but I got a 20g tank off freecycle today and have decided to start a second tank with sand substrate & real plants (my 36g has all artificial plants and kid-dy decor). Since the 20g one will have sand, I shall add the emerald green catfish here, and am...
