Thanks! I usually have more rocks, but I'm loving having so many plants in this tank! I just wish the lights were strong enough to support live plants.
I have a 20 gallon community tank, and I'd like to know if anyone had suggestions of compatible shrimp to add, as they are a family favorite and have a relatively low bioload.
Current stock...
1 trio of guppies + a few fry
2 Bolivian rams
6 pristella tetras
4 amano shrimp (constantly berried...
I tested my water after I noticed my female Bolivian ram had Black vertical bars (I'm assuming from stress?). The water looks good at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 5 nitrate. I'm not sure what her deal is. Maybe the male is being annoying?
I also spotted some new guppy fry!
I couldn't sleep, so I'm out here watching my Bolivian rams hunt guppy fry under the tank's moon lights. Hopefully I'll be able to sleep soon. [emoji42]
I can't say for sure on the other two, but the second one looks like an amano to me. My male is much smaller than my 3 females, so that may amount for the size difference in your tank as well.
You can fight fire with fire, or in this case, snails with assassin snails. I believe there are some fish that love to munch on snails as well. Also, make sure you don't overfeed your tank, add this will only encourage the snails to reproduce. Good luck!
It's just me, but I'd adjust the time so the lights are on later in the evening... Just so I could enjoy the fish more when I'm home. My guppy tank actually gets about 12 hours of light with the moon lights running the other 12 hours.
In my 20 gallon, I have...
3 guppies (2 female 1 male) + fry
2 Bolivian rams
6 golden pristella tetras
4 amano shrimp
2 nerite snails
It's been running really well lately. Everyone gets along swimmingly, and the rams are great for population control!
Welcome! I started out just like you by taking over the family tank as a young teenager. Embrace the addiction, and learn everything you can. It's such a fun journey! What kind of fish are you keeping?
Here's my 20 gallon with new silk plants. I also have frogbit and water lettuce at the top.
Current stock:
- 2 Bolivian rams
- 4 guppies (1 male + 3 females + whatever fry are smart enough to hide from the rams)
- 4 amano shrimp (1 male + 3 females)
I did a 60% water change and rescaped my tank with new silk plants! While I love planted tanks, I'm only doing floating plants until I can upgrade my lights. In the meantime, there are plenty of hiding places for my amano shrimp, guppies, and rams.
I have frogbit and water lettuce in my 20g to give hiding place to my guppy fry, and I love it.
I got my plants from a local gardening center... About $5 to cover the surface of my tank. The guppies and shrimp happily chow down on the plants, so I buy more every couple months.
