    Skimmers and chemicals

Skimmers can be pretty sensitive to water chemistry. Mine stop working for a while whenever I have to put my arm in the tank to do anything. I'm assuming this is probably from the oils on your skin. Feedings also can affect it briefly. Your skimmer should start working properly again on it's...

My new tank log, please advise.

I wouldn't add any uncured rock at this point. That will just confound things, but fully cured rock could only help. At this point I think I would just monitor the ammonia and nitrite daily, do PWC's if anything tests positive. As far as the numbers trending the right way, the tank will cycle...

    Switching from Tap to RO/DI

Hard to say without a pic, but it sounds like you maybe have some Halimeda growing. That's a calciferous algae and grows under conditions similar to coraline. It should not be affected much by going to RO water.

    Sump planning stage.

If it's not pre-drilled, as dskidmore said, drilling the bottom is a no-no. You can generally drill the back or the side panels though. Just verify that they aren't tempered also. Since you are in the planning stages, I would go with drilled as opposed to an overflow box. One thing less to worry...

Purple Up - How long until it makes a noticable difference?

I've been using Purple Up fpr a few weeks now, and honestly I haven't seen it do anything yet. My coraline was growing very well on it's own though so it's hard to say what it's doing. I tend to agree with most here that weekly PWC's will give you everything you need for good growth. That's...

best thing to feed flame angels?

The only thing that my flame angel won't eat is nori. He hates that. I feed him Formula 1&2 frozen, brine shrimp, mysis, flake food, and Hara's Blender Mush. He has 3 blue/green chromies as tankmates so he's pretty much always had to eat fast or go hungry. The chromies are real pigs :)

    Corallife Super Skimmer Questions. Help

Don't worry about the water/bubbles overflowing from the bubble diffuser at all. It always does this after a start-up and will stop after it's broken in. It also seems to repeat a mini-break in every time that you do a water change (my only complaint about this skimmer). I don't think that it...

    six line wrasse

I just got a six-line also and am very happy with him so far. The first day he didn't eat at all and I was afraid I would have to do the live shrimp thing also. By the next day he was eating frozen food just fine. Just needed some time to settle in. He also had to reach an "understanding"...

    Red Sea calcium test kit

Hmm I have a Red Sea calcium test kit, but mine has 3 reagents. You add A, then a scoop of B (powder), then add the C reagent until you get the color change and measure how much C that it took. Mine says it's a Calcium Pro kit. Maybe they screwed up and put bottles that go with my kit in your box?

    skimmer for 55g

I also just got a Remora Pro from somebody on eBay and got the shipping for free. Figuring shipping from a regular mail order place would run probably $20 or more, you would only be looking at an extra $40 over your limit of $100 for the regular Remora. Probably a good place to spend the extra...

Peppermint Shrimp are eating my yellow polyps:(

This is where I saw that peppermints will eat them: http://www.marinedepotlive.com/yellow-polyp---parazoanthus-species--corals--mushrooms---polyps.html Coule be in error I guess, but the reasoning seems to make sense.

    Cleaner Shrimps Active?

I keep a single one and he's always been hyperactive. He also does the climb on the arm thing sometimes, but usually he just gets close enough to see what I'm doing. He knows that "the giant hand" will give him a treat sometimes :) When I feed flake he swims upside-down at the surface and...

Peppermint Shrimp are eating my yellow polyps:(

Ouch I did read someplace when I was researching mine that peppermint shrimp will eat them :( No idea how to go about trapping them.

    refugium ideas

Take a look at the pic I posted in this thread. Pretty simple to set up. I drilled my sump though. My light just lays across the top of the fuge. http://www.aquariumadvice.com/viewtopic.php?p=619693&highlight=#619693

    Protein Skimmer buying advice

You're getting a better pump with the Pro models and the Pro is slightly larger. The pro also has a drain plug in the collection cup for draining into a larger container or bucket and I was never sure if the regular Remora has that or not. Also there is a prefilter and some type of bubble trap...

    NO3 problem

Are you running a canister filter? I was having a similar problem, couldn't get my nitrates to go much below 20 until I finally ditched all the media in my Fluval. I didn't dump it all at once though. First I removed the foam inserts, then about a week later I pulled about half of the...

    light timing question

You can make it easy on yourself by adding one of the power strips with dual timers. One timer just toggles the moons and actinics on and off. The other timer will control your daylights to come on for the hours in the middle of the actinic cycle. Not a necessity, but they work nice.

Starfish and Gobies and Crabs... Oh My!

Thanks zenn. I was hoping that was the case. When I looked them up on marine depot it said that they got the majority of their needs met by photosynthesis, but for some reason liveaquaria says you have to supplement with phytoplankton or brine shrimp. I guess they want to sell the phytoplankton :)

    Split lighting cycle - stupid?

I do something like that also because I work until 7:30 every night. My lights come on in the afternoon and click off around midnight.

Starfish and Gobies and Crabs... Oh My!

Yeah, that star has always been strange. Really active. I thought maybe he was not getting enough to eat but he never excepts target feeds. Has been doing well for a few months now. I did have a question about feeding those polyps. The guy at the LFS said basically to treat them like my...

Starfish and Gobies and Crabs... Oh My!

Hey All I added some yellow polyps to my 50 gallon earlier today mainly as an experiment. I want to find out if my Flame Angel is a coral muncher or not. So far the polyps have been completely ignored by the angelfish. Everything else in my tank had to pay a trip to check out the new guys...

    Small Red Starfish

Starfish are fairly active. If he's still in the same spot in the morning you can try flipping him over on his back. A healthy star will usually turn back over right away. Sorry you got some bad advice :(

Glass vs Acrylic vs reef ready

I have a 50G that was originally FOWLR but is slowly turning into a reef. I love that size. Very easy to work in. Not sure about putting a 180 on the second floor. My 90 is on the second floor, sort of. My living room is over my garage. I was definetly concerned though hehe. The guy at the...

    Lighting questions

Hi Ayesha97 Yes they are the same thing. I'm a big fan of the Coralife Aqualights. This one would get you 130 watts and you can do a lot with 6.5 watts/gallon :) http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=12109&N=2004+113345 Not sure if this is the best price you can get on...

    new aquarium and carbon

The water will clear up on it's own, but may actually take a day or two. The aragonite is pretty cloudy stuff :) I also have a Fluval 304 running on my 50 gallon, but I only use it to give me a little extra flow, and to run carbon which I do about 1 week per month. Initially I was also using...
