I like my tea water. Looks more natural to my eye.

    Question on ph controller....

You would definitely need to open a new bottle/can every time. I don't need a reason to open a can of Coke, so that's no problem for me! I still like the vinegar better for calibration. I'll drink the Coke while I calibrate in vinegar...

    looong move

I like coolers, too. What kind of fish? If they can tolerate it (and most can), I would slowly drop the temperature in the tank to around 74 degrees during the week or two prior to the move. Good advice on the fasting. Mine go a week without food from time to time and suffer no ill...

    Timers...

I run a dawn/dusk effect, too. My ramp is much faster than yours, though. I think I ramp up/down in about an hour. I also have a timer on my moonlights. Those overlap dawn and dusk by about 30 mins. each. It's a mess under the tanks with all those timers. I'm using an "octopus" extension...

    White substance

I would guess tha tthe live plants are absorbing enough calcium, magnesium, iron, etc. to throw the balance off and allow the lime to precipitate out of solution. Could also be temperature or agitation/aeration related. If the temp drops or agitation stops, solubility will decline...allowing...

    Pleco question ...

I've had my 13" pleco since he was about 2"...give or take, 10 years. Mine goes through phases where he will gulp alot and then go long months without doing it. Considering I can't seem to STOP him from eating and growing and pooping, I guess it's not much to worry about in my case... FWIW, I...

    oh crap its hot!

Evaporation is a cooling process. If you airate the tank and provide a little fan to keep some air moving over the tank, you should be able to drop the temp a couple degrees.

    Beach Rocks?

I've collected a bunch of rock from the shore of Lake Michigan and various local streams/creeks/rivers and never had a bit of trouble.

    Question on ph controller....

    1. I would get the cleaning solution too. 2. One use 3. Dip the probe directly into the solution packet 4. No You need to recalibrate every couple months. You can use RO water for this. Calibration is very simple and quick.

Question on Milwaukee regulator and bubble counter.

Even with two tanks driven to 40 ppm you should be able to stretch a 20 lb cylinder out more than a year. you'll need a truck to transport it, too. I don't see a need to go bigger than 10...

What does death by old age look like?

I lost a Giant Danio several weeks ago. I strongly suspect old age. She was in excess of five years old and hadn't shown any growth in years. No noticable change in color, activity, or behavior. She was just dead one morning. No fatalities since.

Getting otos on Wednesday, any advice?

Six sounds about right. Expect to lose a few. They seem to like a current, but also do fine without. Coloration should be strong with a dark brown stripe along the sides. Most of mine are about 1 1/2". Good luck!

Considering Fluval 404 for 55 gallon any opinions?

I've been running a 304 on my 55 gal tank for a couple years now. Just replaced my first part a couple weeks ago: the impeller cover. It was still working fine, but looked like it could use it. IMO, the 404 would be overkill for a 55. I'd do a 304 again in a heart beat.

Need opinions for a low-growing "carpet" species..

OOOHH! That Hemianthus sound about perfect! Small scale, like the Riccia, but easier to plant and very tolerant. Now, where to get some? A pic of the "HC"
