    Canister for 29 gal?

Exactly, and I do it about twice a year...maybe. I've replaced the foam pads twice in 3 years, so its also been cheap to operate. I use a 2213 on my 29. Couldn't be happier. Eric

    how to move

Get some ice chests; buy or borrow. Fill them half up with water from the aquarium and catch as many fish as you can. You're going to have drain a heck of a lot more than 60% of the water so catching all the fish shouldn't be a problem. If you have more than a couple inches of water in that tank...

    Tank background help

I used this stuff Crystalizing Paint Very easy to apply. Brush it on with a throw-away brush or just swirl it on a small tank. Then sit back and watch the crystal patterns form. Very durable but you can remove it with a razor blade. Eric

    Hydor inline heater review????

Well, I loved mine until yesterday when I discovered it wasn't working and it was 70 degrees in my tank. I have the 200w version for 1/2" hose hooked up to an Eheim canister filter. I bought both at the same time about 3 years ago. The filter works great. Only the light works on the heater. And...

Emperor 400 is LOUD as all heck!

Mine was very loud and produced lots of micro bubbles when it was new. It took a few weeks for some slime to build up. That quieted it down a lot. When I break it down every few months and really clean it out, it's noisy again for a few days. Oh, it must run wide open or you can't be in the...

    Cleaning gravel?

I didn't realize you were "across the pond" when I posted. Just use the links as examples of what is available. Two are syphon, one is electric. I've seen air powered also. I'm sure you can find something close by and as a previous poster suggested, a simple hose and a steady hand works , too...

    Cleaning gravel?

If a lot of food reaches the bottom, you are feeding too much. You will always have to vacuum the gravel but a lot of food on the bottom, especially in a new tank like yours, is trouble. Healthy fish always look hungry. Don't fall for it. If you enjoy feeding them, and we all do, make sure...

    Emperor Penquin 280 noisey?

I'll betcha my Emperor 400 makes twice as much noise and 2 times the bubbles your 280 makes. In other words, "I ain't impressed". I'll be replacing mine soon. I've done everything imaginable and more to quiet this thing down, but nothing works. Eric

    Tank maintenance - diatom filter

I didn't worry too much about it. Sometimes, before I stored it, if I had time, I would run the filter in a pail of tap water to get the benefit of the chlorine. Never really had a problem with icky stuff growing in the jar. YMMV. The reason I tried to save the powder was that I was poor and...

    Tank maintenance - diatom filter

I had a Vortex many years ago. It died and I will get another one day. Setting it up was a pain until I bought the recirculating valves Vortex sells. You open the jar, add water and diatom powder, close the jar, close the valve and turn it on. Run it for a minute or two until the bag is coated...

How is the your new Rena XP3 coming along?

Can you tell me what size the tubing is on the XP3? The Hydor heater comes in two sizes and when I order the filter, I'd like to order the heater also. TIA, Eric

How often do you change out your heater?

Is condensation inside the tube a bad thing? My heater's been that way forever and I thought it was a normal condition. Silly me. Oh boy, an excuse buy a new toy! Eric

    Hospital Tank/quarantine Tank?

Hi all, Remember, some meds that you treat your fish with will kill a biological filter and also carbon is usually a no-no. Going through the trouble of setting up a cycled hospital tank may not be worth it. Frequent water changes are probably a better strategy for maintaining water quality...
