Hey everyone! Just a little background, I currently have a saltwater tank, and my mom finally have the ok to a second tank. I decided I want to go with freshwater, and have a 20L for it. My mom is also insistent it be a community tank, however it won't be planted unless I'm able to get whatever's required cheaply. Anyways, I want to know everyone's opinion on everything. Fish, hardware, sand/gravel, whatever. Tons of thanks!

Going planted won't be cheap unless you go low light. You could get what you need to go low light on a 20 gallon long (I assume that's what you mean) for maybe an extra 50$, plus more once your fertilizer runs out, but that'll take a while.

The best genus of plant to start out with in my opinion is cryptocoryne. It's a hardy rooting plant that generally doesn't need much light
