36g bowfront blank slate

I just got this tank for Christmas and am currently in the planning stages. As far as fish go, I'm thinking of something like this...12 neon tetras, 4 corys, and 2 gbr's. I also plan to use black sand for the substrate. I am wanting to try my hand at live plants but am unsure if the lighting that came with the tank is sufficient. It is a full spectrum 24" 17w T8. What type of plants, if any, will this sustain?

Anubia maybe some java fern that's about it. I have the same kit that I am cycling and the first thing I did was order some t5ho. That light doesn't even equal out to a watt per gallon.
