Is there a way that a bigger cihilid can go in the same 55 gallon tank as a angel and a barb fish. Not a dwarf.

i agree with fishboy, most of the other 'larger' chiclids might not work out and may try to eat your barbs.
you said no dwarf chiclids but there are plenty of them which stay small but will still get on well with angel fish

Discus probably wouldn't work with that barbs as discus like much warmer water than what barbs do. pH ranges are also quite different, not too sure exactly though. Also if you are a beginner discus aren't a good idea because they require a lot of work

Adult discus are most commonly kept between 81 and 83 degrees. There are many barbs that have a range up to 82 degrees, and certainly pushing that limit to 84 is no problem. 84 is also okay for adult discus. If it were juvies or sub adult discus you would want temps of 86 or so and that still isn't out of the question for barbs, a fish that has a life span of a couple of years. You wouldn't even notice a shortening of their life span.

Also, discus aren't all that much work if you buy specimens that are sub adults or adults, which is what I would recommend for a beginner anyway. Could get by with 2-3 30% PWC's per week.

And as far as the pH range you can completely ignore that as long as your pH is somewhere between 5.0 and 9.5 or so.
