ive been fish less cycling my 40 gallon for 3 weeks now and in the 1st week ammonia 5ppm nitrite and nitrates 0. i seeded my tank with 3 gallons of water from my friends establish tank and a filter cartridge. the next day i had nitrite and nitrates. now my ammonia goes down to from 4ppm to 1 ppm in about 2 days but my nitrites and nitrates just keep going up. nitrites are off the chart and nitrates 160ppm (but seem a little off he chart as well). my question is when will i see my nitrites go down because they just seem to stay off the chart? should i do a 50% pwc?

IMO you need a PWC with nitrates that high can stall the cycle. Just dose the ammonia back up to 4 and it shouldn't be much longer
