I moved from test strips to API (drops added to tank water in test tubes). my question is... do you hold the test tube flat against the white or stand it up to view the color? for my ph it looks 8.2 standing up, laying against white it loks like 8.4

API shuold read close against a white paper to tell the color

yup against the white. It tells you in the directions, make sure you read them and follow closely for accurate results.
