Know this sounds stupid, but do all dead fish and invertebrates float?

No
Guppies sink
Platies sink
Mollies sink
Lots sink those are only the ones I have experience with

I think it just has more to do with the individual fish's buoyancy, decomposition, and even cause of death. I've had different fish of the same kind either sink, float, or get stuck to the filter outtake.

I suppose they float a little bit right when they die and sink later on if left longer.

I lost a cory the other day and it floated. Then I've only ever lost two other fish and they both sunk

All dead animals get buildup of gasses as they decompose, eventually they'd all float.. Right? o_O
