Have an overstocked 54g tank is it absolutely necessary to run air bubbles or is the spray bar enough surface movement?

The filter is an xp3 so I'm very well filtered,

Air bubbles aren't necessary if you don't like them. If the tank isn't getting enough oxygen the fish will let you know by hanging at the surface and gasping. Does your filter provide surface movement? If so then it's probably sufficient. Air stones are good to have in case of a filter malfunction though so keep that in mind as well.

Yeah the spray bar does a real good job.

And yes I'm really planning on gettting a battery powered airstone....where can I get 1 and how much?
