So I'm looking to start a second tank in my house. I currently have a 35 gal with some fake plants and about 9 guppies. It's set up alright with fake plants but I'm looking to make a more interesting tank with real plants. I'm looking to get a 20 gal and I was wondering if anyone had tips on what I should stock.

Should I put the guppies in the 20 gal and use the 35 for something new so I have more room to expand?

If so, what would you recommend as a fun set up with fish for a 35 gal or 20 gal well lit tank? I plan on making it my first planted tank with either one.

You could move the guppies to the 20 gal, that would give you more options for the 35; that's probably what I would do.

What sort of fish do you like? There are a lot of options for a 35.

I like colorful fish but I think cichlids might be a little too much. Any ideas?

Well there's a lot of options to name, but here's one example:

8 rummynose tetra
6 blue emperor tetra (aka kerri tetra)
3 guppies
1 bristlenose pleco (needs driftwood)
1 bolivian ram or sparkling or dwarf gourami
